Summary: Dietary lipids play a crucial role in modulating metabolic inflammation, and interleukin 18 (IL-18) has been consistently linked to obesity and insulin resistance. This study aimed to assess if the quality of lipid intake affects IL-18 plasma levels and its implications on insulin resistance. The study confirmed that IL-18 is positively correlated with insulin resistance, and individuals with higher HOMA-IR levels displayed elevated IL-18 levels. The quality of dietary lipids, particularly the ratio between different fatty acids and the intake of omega-3, showed a negative correlation with IL-18 levels.

Summary: The transcription factor NRF2 and its endogenous inhibitor KEAP1 are important for maintaining cellular redox homeostasis. Activation of NRF2 can provide cellular protection against age-related diseases. Recent studies have identified compounds, including omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and their electrophilic derivatives, that may restore NRF2 function in aging cells. These findings suggest that n-3 PUFAs could be potential agents for preventing chronic diseases and restoring age-related NRF2 impairment.

Summary: This study reveals that Fas-associated factor 1 (FAF1) interacts directly with free polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and this interaction is crucial for protecting cells from ferroptosis. FAF1 assembles a globular structure that sequesters free PUFAs into a hydrophobic core, preventing PUFA peroxidation and ultimately inhibiting ferroptosis initiation.

Summary: The study found that consumption of oily fish, but not nonoily fish, was associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes in 392,287 middle-aged and older participants. Additionally, the use of fish oil supplements was also linked to a reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes, especially with consistent use over time.

Summary: Our study showed that PUFAs accelerate the photodamage to PSII in Synechocystis cells, while monounsaturated fatty acids do not have this effect. PUFAs are specifically incorporated into the sn-2 position of PG molecules, a process that requires the involvement of acyl-ACP synthetase.

Summary: The toxic effects of pesticides, especially in aquatic ecosystems, have been a major concern for environmental and human safety. Biomarkers, such as antioxidant enzymes and fatty acids, are crucial in assessing the impacts of pesticides on organisms. Fatty acids have been identified as potential biomarkers due to their sensitivity to alterations in organism homeostasis, particularly in freshwater communities.

Summary: This article summarizes two highly cited papers published in Clinical Science in 1982 and 2011, which investigated the effects of stable isotope-labeled amino acids infusion and high-dose omega-3 fatty acid intake on skeletal muscle protein synthesis. These papers provide experimental approaches to study human physiology, novel insights into the impact of nutritional state and specific nutrients on muscle protein synthesis, and potential interventions for preventing and reversing muscle mass decline.

Summary: This study recovers maximum value-added products from Kappaphycus alvarezii using emerging green extraction technologies and evaluates their bio-functional properties. Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and ultrasonication assisted approach are used to extract lipids and κ-carrageenan from the biomass, while subcritical water hydrolysis is used to recover total protein. The effectiveness of κ-carrageenan in inhibiting the main protease of SARS-CoV-2 is investigated using in vitro and in silico approaches.

Summary: The increase in life expectancy has led to a higher prevalence of age-related neurological diseases, such as cognitive impairment, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease. This study aimed to examine the association between specific categories and subcategories of dietary fats and cognitive status in older Italian adults. The results showed that moderate consumption of certain types of saturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids was associated with a lower risk of cognitive impairment, while moderate intake of linoleic acid was associated with a higher risk of cognitive impairment.

Summary: Pancytopenia in untreated hyperthyroidism is rare, with only 30 reported cases in the English literature. Low-dose methimazole therapy was effective in resolving pancytopenia and liver dysfunction, along with restoring euthyroidism. Further research and analysis are needed to improve understanding and decision-making regarding therapeutic options for this rare hematological complication in Graves' hyperthyroidism.

Summary: Conflicting data exist on the relationship between hyperglycaemia, diabetes, and SIRT6 expression. This study found that high glucose exposure led to lower DNA methylation in the SIRT6 promoter, increased expression of SIRT6 and TET2, and persisting epigenetic changes after glucose normalization. Diabetic patients had lower SIRT6 DNA methylation levels that correlated inversely with plasma glucose levels, indicating the involvement of epigenetic mechanisms in regulating SIRT6 expression.

Summary: This study examined the COVID-19 infections, adverse events, and humoral response after vaccination in long-term care facility (LTCF) residents. The results showed that only 12.1% of vaccinated residents got COVID-19 during the 12-month follow-up, with no sex differences. Local adverse reactions were more common in females. The antibody response was influenced by sex-specific comorbidities.
