Organic bases represent a class of widely utilized catalysts in organic synthesis. During the last decade many research groups have been involved in the challenge of supporting homogeneous catalysts on the surface of organic and inorganic supports with the aim of producing efficient heterogeneous and reusable catalysts. Among these catalysts organic bases ( i. e. amines, guanidines, etc.) have received particular attention. The present review shows the developments made during the last twenty years in the area of preparing, characterizing and applying supported organic bases for the synthesis of fine chemicals. The methods for the preparation of the supported catalysts are briefly discussed. Particular attention is paid to find possible correlations between the methodologies utilized to prepare the solid catalysts and their efficiency in model reactions of general interest; in addition the identification of possible leaching phenomena and the approaches to face the problem of preventing the catalyst deactivation are considered. The complexity of the supported base catalysts, the difficulty frequently encountered by reactants in reaching the active sites and the role played by the unfunctionalized surface of the support are also discussed together with the description of the efficient recovery and reusability of these hybrid catalysts. Finally, after some general conclusions, future trends are presented.

Ambient Synthesis of Tricyclic Naphthalenes via Stepwise Styryl-yne Dearomative Diels-Alder Cyclization

Nicola Camedda, Matteo Lanzi, Franca Bigi, Raimondo Maggi, Giovanni Maestri

Summary: The cascade reaction promoted by MnO2 allows the synthesis of fused tricycles with a naphthalene core under ambient conditions. This practical synthetic tool utilizes inexpensive and abundant manganese species, affording products through propargyl alcohol oxidation, stepwise Diels-Alder cyclization, and rearomatization. Density functional theory shows that the usually unfavorable stepwise Diels-Alder mechanism can be a general tool for challenging dearomative annulation.

Summary: This study utilizes density functional theory modeling to investigate the mechanistic study of the cycloisomerization of polyunsaturated substrates catalyzed by all-metal aromatic tripalladium complexes and carboxylic acids. The results confirm the unique mechanistic differences exerted by these emerging catalysts and their close parallel to the mechanism of the aromatic substitution of regular arenes.

Summary: Visible-light-promoted dimerization of arylacryloyl allenamides can be achieved at room temperature using an iridium(III) photocatalyst. This reaction leads to the formation of complex molecular architectures with high selectivity, and the outcome is determined by the substitution pattern of the alkene.

Sequential Strategies to Trigger Mild Dearomative Diels-Alder Cyclizations

Nicola Camedda, Franca Bigi, Raimondo Maggi, Giovanni Maestri

Summary: A sequential strategy enables the challenging assembly of dihydronaphthalenes through the key annulation of an alkyne with a vinylarene under mild conditions. The products are obtained in good yields and exhibit high functional tolerance, thanks to the domino nucleophilic substitution and dearomative Diels-Alder and ene reactions. DFT modeling data suggest that alkali cations play a crucial role in ensuring a smooth dearomative cyclization of the in situ generated intermediates.

Evolution of Triangular All-Metal Aromatic Complexes from Bonding Quandaries to Powerful Catalytic Platforms

Franca Bigi, Daniele Cauzzi, Nicola Della Ca, Max Malacria, Raimondo Maggi, Elena Motti, Yanlan Wang, Giovanni Maestri

Summary: This manuscript provides an overview of the literature on trinuclear complexes with delocalized metal-metal bonds resembling regular aromatics, composed of main group elements. The focus is on the structural and electronic features of stable aromatic clusters, along with their reported catalytic applications, including C-C forming cascades and cross-coupling methods. These examples highlight the unique reactivity exhibited by all-metal aromatic complexes, which often surpass their mononuclear counterparts in terms of chemoselectivity and chemical robustness.
