Summary: Some patients with long-standing indwelling shunt catheters developed malignant peritoneal mesothelioma, suggesting a potential association. Although rare, mesothelioma should be considered in patients with shunts who present with new ascites.

Summary: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion is a common neurosurgical procedure, with ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunting being a widely used technique. In addition to VP shunting, ventriculopleural (VPL) shunting is also used in some patients, but can lead to complications such as pleural effusion and pneumothorax.

Summary: This study aimed to create a standardized infection prevention bundle to reduce the rate of shunt infections. The implementation of Calgary Adult Shunt Infection Prevention Protocol (CASIPP) significantly reduced the infection rate, and the introduction of chlorhexidine/alcohol further decreased the rate to 0%. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that the use of chlorhexidine/alcohol with CASIPP was associated with a significant reduction in the odds of developing a shunt infection.

Summary: This study reports the benefits of a standardized protocol for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunting in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). The implementation of the protocol resulted in a significant reduction in shunt revisions, especially for patients with a higher body mass index (BMI).

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between preoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of leukocyte, chloride, glucose, aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, adenosine deaminase, lactic acid, and protein, and ventriculoperitoneal shunt infection. The results showed that CSF glucose < 2.8 mmol/L and CSF lactate >2.8 mmol/L are risk factors for infection after ventriculoperitoneal shunt.

Summary: The clinical study found that a substantial number of iNPH-P patients showed a noticeable motor response on parkinsonian signs a few days after ELD and over two and a half years after VPS. There were no significant changes in cognitive performances detected during the study.

Summary: The meta-analysis showed that the use of Antibiotic-Impregnated Shunt Catheters (AISC) reduced the infection rate in shunt surgery significantly. AISC was found to be more effective in preventing early shunt infections and in high-risk patient populations. It is recommended for use in infants and high-risk groups.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed clinical studies on anterior and posterior ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement and performed a meta-analysis. The results showed that anterior and posterior shunts had mostly comparable outcomes, but anteriorly placed shunts had better survival rates at 2-year and 5-year intervals.

Summary: Ventriculoatrial shunt placement is a safe and familiar second-line shunting procedure in neurosurgery, when standard options are not appropriate. The key to the procedure lies in confirming the location of the distal catheter tip and addressing potential complications.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed 18 patients who underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt revision due to implant exposure. The results showed that prompt and effective preoperative repair could prevent cerebrospinal fluid infection and successfully salvage the implant in most patients.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the clinical outcomes of shunting in normal pressure hydrocephalus following a new standardized protocol. The results showed that surgical treatment by VPS improves symptoms in most patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus. However, the study also found complications and reoperation rates.

Summary: This meta-analysis evaluates the safety and effectiveness of lumboperitoneal shunt (LPS) compared to ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) for treating communicating hydrocephalus. The results show that LPS has lower complication and obstruction rates, and improves radiological outcomes.

Summary: This meta-analysis investigated the safety of staged and simultaneous operation in patients with comorbid cranial defects with hydrocephalus. The results showed that staged surgery is associated with a lower rate of postoperative subdural effusion. However, the stability of this conclusion is uncertain according to the sensitivity analysis, therefore individualized decisions should be made based on each patient's condition and cerebrospinal fluid tap test.
