Summary: LC-MS/MS can reliably detect commonly used ICSs in the blood at least 8 hours after dosing, providing a measure of adherence in severe asthma patients. Lower blood levels were associated with higher exacerbation rates and poorer lung function.

Summary: Low adherence is a common issue in severe asthma patients, whether measured directly or self-reported. There is poor agreement between the two methods, suggesting a disassociation between self-assessment of medication adherence and actual oral corticosteroid use, indicating that each approach may provide complementary information in clinical practice.

Summary: The study utilizes artificial intelligence and wireless sensors to monitor patient medication use, particularly common errors with inhalers or insulin pens. Results show that the AI framework can automatically detect whether patients are using inhalers or insulin pens correctly, demonstrating potential for improving medication safety.

Summary: This study reveals that adherence to asthma biologics is higher than to ICS and is associated with different factors. Adherence to ICS before starting asthma biologics and during the first 6 months of biologic use is significantly related to biologic adherence, but not significantly associated with a reduction in asthma exacerbations.

Summary: This study aimed to measure asthma medication adherence in the 12 months after an asthma exacerbation and explore the influence of care type and socioeconomic status on adherence. The results showed a significant improvement in medication adherence after an asthma exacerbation, especially in patients with multiple exacerbations. Seeing a specialist after the exacerbation, rather than before, resulted in the greatest improvement in adherence. Additionally, patients with lower socioeconomic status had lower adherence before the exacerbation but showed a similar improvement compared to those with higher socioeconomic status.

Summary: This multicountry, observational, case-control study aimed to compare treatment regimens, inhaler techniques, medication adherence, and other characteristics of controlled and uncontrolled pediatric asthma. The study found that children in higher treatment steps had a higher risk of uncontrolled asthma, and the risk was also associated with a larger change in lung function post and pre-salbutamol. However, adherence and inhaler techniques were not related to the risk of uncontrolled asthma. Other factors, such as environmental factors and biological profiles, may influence the risk of uncontrolled asthma in this population.

Summary: A telephone-based reminder system was developed to improve DAPT adherence post-PCI, leading to directed interventions in nearly 1 in 10 patients contacted. However, the system did not significantly improve PDC levels compared to a contemporary sample, highlighting the ongoing difficulty in detecting barriers to adherence.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a questionnaire to segment adolescents with asthma into different archetypes based on their motivations for individualized self-management interventions. Six archetypes were identified and described, and a 17-item questionnaire was developed to identify these archetypes. The study has important implications for healthcare professionals to customize adherence interventions for different segments of adolescents.

Summary: Medication non-adherence can lead to increased morbidity, mortality, and side effects, while reducing effectiveness. Methodological issues exist in measuring and reporting adherence for asthma and TB, with variations between and within diseases. The communicable nature of TB has made dose-by-dose monitoring a recommended treatment standard.

Summary: This study reviewed global literature to identify the main determinants of adherence to inhaled therapy for asthma and COPD. The study found that older age, good disease knowledge/literacy, obesity, good cognitive performance, higher income, being employed, and using multiple drugs/inhalers were significant determinants of adherence. However, the overall strength of the evidence was only low to moderate.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of benralizumab in severe eosinophilic asthma patients, including onset of effect, impact on health-related quality of life, exacerbation rate, lung function, and nasal polyposis symptoms. Results showed that benralizumab significantly reduced exacerbation risk and improved HRQOL, lung function, and nasal symptoms early in the treatment period compared to placebo.

Summary: Asthma is a common chronic airways disease, and although it has a significant impact on patients, there is still a lack of consensus on the definition and clinical progression of mild asthma. Recent changes in the treatment approach for mild asthma have led to controversies and unmet needs.
