Recently much interest has been shown in developing a treatment of muscle wasting associated with a range of diseases as well as in ageing, which are major medical and socioecomonic problems. Emerging molecular techniques have made it possible to gain a better understanding of the growth factor genes involved and how they are activated by physical activity including the IGF-I gene that can be spliced to give rise to different isoforms, one of which is called MGF that activates muscle progenitor cells that provide the extra nuclei required for muscle hypertrophy, repair and maintenance. This fact that MGF 'kick starts' the hypertrophy process clearly has potential for abuse and has already attracted the attention of body builders.

Strength Performance Across the Oral Contraceptive Cycle of Team Sport Athletes: A Cross-Sectional Study

Astrid Reif, Barbara Wessner, Patricia Haider, Harald Tschan, Christoph Triska

Summary: This study investigated the effects of oral contraceptive pills on the knee-extensor and flexor strength performance of female first division team athletes. The results showed no significant differences in strength performance between different phases of the oral contraceptive cycle, suggesting that OCP intake leads to a stable but downregulated hormone cycle without affecting strength performance.

Effects of an increased habitual dietary protein intake followed by resistance training on fitness, muscle quality and body composition of seniors: A randomised controlled trial

Sandra Unterberger, Rudolf Aschauer, Patrick A. Zoehrer, Agnes Draxler, Bernhard Franzke, Eva-Maria Strasser, Karl-Heinz Wagner, Barbara Wessner

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of increasing protein intake in older adults through dietary supplementation and determine whether this increase would lead to greater improvements when combined with resistance training. The results showed that a substantial increase in protein intake was achievable within 17 weeks in community-living elderly individuals. However, the additional protein intake had minor effects on body composition and did not impact physical performance or muscle quality.

Resistance training with or without nutritional supplementation showed no influence on muscle thickness in old-institutionalized adults: a secondary analysis of the Vienna Active Ageing Study

Eva M. Strasser, Bernhard Franzke, Marlene Hofmann, Barbara Schober-Halper, Stefan Oesen, Waltraud Jandrasits, Alexandra Graf, Martin Ploder, Norbert Bachl, Michael Quittan, Karl-Heinz Wagner, Barbara Wessner

Summary: In institutionalized elderly individuals, six months of resistance training with or without nutritional supplementation did not alter muscle thickness of the quadriceps, but baseline values and health status significantly influenced the training effect. Further studies may focus on individualizing training regimes based on accompanying diseases and medications in this population.

Impairments of intestinal arginine and NO metabolisms trigger aging-associated intestinal barrier dysfunction and 'inflammaging'

Annette Brandt, Anja Baumann, Angelica Hernandez-Arriaga, Finn Jung, Anika Nier, Raphaela Staltner, Dragana Rajcic, Christian Schmeer, Otto W. Witte, Barbara Wessner, Bernhard Franzke, Karl-Heinz Wagner, Amelia Camarinha-Silva, Ina Bergheim

Summary: Aging is associated with low grade inflammation, called "inflammaging". Maintaining intestinal homeostasis may help extend the healthy status of older adults. In this study, it was found that even in healthy older men, low grade bacterial endotoxemia is common. Additionally, while intestinal microbiota composition changes significantly during aging, fecal microbiota transplantation does not protect against aging-associated intestinal barrier dysfunction in mice.
