Summary: This study conducted a prospective observational cohort study in rural Uganda to investigate the progression of atherosclerosis in people living with HIV. The results showed that treated HIV infection was not associated with faster cIMT progression in the region, suggesting that HIV infection may not be classified as a risk factor for subclinical atherosclerosis progression in rural sub-Saharan Africa.

Summary: In HIV-positive patients, low levels of CD4 cells and high viral load are associated with an increased risk of developing subclinical atherosclerosis. Patients with a CD4 cell nadir < 350/mu l may have fewer early EPCs.

Summary: This study examined the association between dietary patterns and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT). The results showed that adherence to a convenience dietary pattern was associated with increased risk of high cIMT, while adherence to a prudent dietary pattern was associated with decreased risk of high cIMT.

Summary: Recent evidence suggests that trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), a metabolite of L-carnitine and choline, is linked to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. However, Japanese people who consume lots of fish, which is high in TMAO, show a low risk of atherosclerosis. This study found that TMAO was not a significant risk factor for atherosclerosis in elderly Japanese people, while a low level of trimethyllysine (TML) might be a potential risk. L-carnitine may be a marker for atherosclerosis in women.

Summary: The study revealed a correlation between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) in a low-income Chinese population aged >= 45 years. The risk of carotid atherosclerosis increased with the presence of multiple MetS components in middle-aged and elderly individuals. Detailed management strategies are essential for early prevention and intervention of atherosclerosis in this population.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies in people living with HIV in Munich, Germany, after the first phase of the coronavirus pandemic. The seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 co-infection in people living with HIV was found to be 1.5% in the study sample and 2.2% in the subset of Munich citizens. The study suggests that the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 co-infection in people living with HIV is not higher than previous reports from general populations in 'hot-spot' areas.

Summary: This study examined the alterations in intima-media thickness (IMT) and stiffness-related parameters in the carotid arteries of irradiated patients. The results showed increased IMT and shear wave velocity in certain segments of the irradiated carotids. These findings highlight the need for surveillance of radiation-induced vasculopathy.

Summary: In recent years, the relationship between excess overweight and central precocious puberty (CPP) has been studied, particularly in girls. Different nutritional choices have been linked to different patterns of puberty, with a high-fat diet (HFD) being associated with altered biochemical pathways and a proinflammatory status. Though limited, evidence suggests that HFDs can harm pubertal development and that strategies to prevent precocious puberty in children with obesity should be developed. Promoting HFD-avoiding behavior can help preserve physiological development and protect reproductive health, making controlling HFDs a target for global health improvement.

Summary: Socio-economic determinants of health (SDoH) are nonmedical factors in the socio-economic sphere that significantly affect health outcomes, mediated by behavioral characteristics, physical environment, psychosocial circumstances, access to care, and biological factors. Research on the impact of SDoH on peripheral artery disease (PAD) occurrence and care is limited compared to cardiovascular diseases. This review explores the multifaceted nature of SDoH in PAD and their association with occurrence and care, while addressing methodological issues and the potential for interventions.

Summary: The prevalence of pediatric obesity is increasing worldwide. This study investigates the transcriptional differences in the subcutaneous adipose tissue of children with different weight status. The results show significant deregulation in both coding and non-coding transcripts in the severe obesity group compared to other weight groups. The deregulation is mainly related to lipid metabolism and bioenergetic processes.

Summary: Since 2019, the world has faced a severe challenge from the outbreak of a novel beta-coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) known as COVID-19. The rapid spread of this virus has led to a high death rate, causing millions of infections and deaths worldwide. Patients with cancer are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19 due to the suppression of their immune systems caused by cancer treatments. Therefore, it is crucial to have proper management and treatment strategies for cancer patients who may be infected with SARS-CoV-2.
