This systematic review describes evidence concerning medicinal plants that, in addition to exerting hypoglycemic effects, decrease accompanying complications such as nephropathy, neuropathy, retinopathy, hypertension, and/or hyperlipidemia among individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM). Studies on the antidiabetic mechanisms of medicinal plants have shown that most of them produce hypoglycemic activity by stimulating insulin secretion, augmenting peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), inhibiting alpha-amylase or alpha-glucosidase, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) secretion, advanced glycation end product (AGE) formation, free radical scavenging plus antioxidant activity (against reactive oxygen or nitrogen species (ROS/RNS)), up-regulating or elevating translocation of glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT-4), and preventing development of insulin resistance. Not only are medicinal plants effective in DM, but many of them also possess a variety of effects on other disease states, including the complications of DM. Such plants may be appropriate alternatives or adjuncts to available antidiabetic medications.

The Roles of Vitamin D in Increasing the Body's Immunity and Reducing Injuries due to Viral Infections: With an Emphasis on its Possible Role in SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19)

Elahe Aleebrahim-Dehkordi, Niloofar Deravi, Shirin Yaghoobpoor, Dariush Hooshyar, Mahmoud Rafieian-Kopaei

Summary: Vitamin D plays an important role in immunity and recovery from viral infections, especially COVID-19. It can enhance cellular immunity, reduce cytokine storm, and potentially provide protection against acute lung injuries. However, vitamin D deficiency should not be considered a specific risk factor for COVID-19 infection.

The Exosomes: Staring Biomarkers and Novel Therapeutic Strategies

Farzad Koosha, Niloufar Alimohammadi, Mahmoud Rafeian-Kopaei

Summary: Extracellular vesicles, also known as exosomes, are small membrane-bound particles that play a significant role in cellular communication by transporting various molecules. Their potential in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular diseases has a bright future, offering new possibilities in cardiology medicine. They can serve as valuable biomarkers and natural drug-delivery vehicles for targeted treatments in myocardial injury and repair.

A Comparative Study on Anticancer Effects of the Alhagi maurorum and Amygdalus haussknechtii Extracts Alone and in Combination with Docetaxel on 4T1 Breast Cancer Cells

Nayereh Bahamin, Shahin Ahmadian, Mahmoud Rafieian-Kopaei, Gholamreza Mobini, Mahshid Shafiezadeh, Amin Soltani

Summary: This study demonstrates that the combination of Alhagi maurorum and Amygdalus haussknechtii with docetaxel has synergistic antitumor effects on 4T1 breast cancer cells, inducing apoptosis and regulating gene expression of HIF-1alpha and FZD7. Amygdalus haussknechtii has acceptable antitumor activity but shows limited efficacy in combination with docetaxel.

Chitin nanofiber-based nanocomposites containing biodegradable polymers for food packaging applications

Maryam Heidari, Morteza Khomeiri, Hossein Yousefi, Mahmoud Rafieian, Mahboobeh Kashiri

Summary: The study focused on fabricating and characterizing ChNF-based nanocomposites with biodegradable polymers, such as thermoplastic starch, gelatin, and poly(vinyl alcohol). Mixing ChNF with polymers resulted in more homogeneous surfaces and improved crystalline properties. The nanocomposite films showed increased water vapor permeability compared to pure ChNF film, with varying water solubility values. Incorporating thermoplastic starch, gelatin, and poly(vinyl alcohol) led to enhanced physical and mechanical properties in the nanocomposites, making them potential materials for biodegradable and edible food packaging.

Up-regulation of chemokine receptor type 4 expression in the ischemic reperfused heart by alcoholic extract of Cichorium intybus rescue the heart from ischemia injury in male rat

Mehrnoosh Sedighi, Vajihe Ghorbanzadeh, Saber Abaszadeh, Arash Karimi, Mostafa Cheraghi, Mahmoud Rafieian-Kopaei, Maryam Moghimian, Asghar Mohammadi, Saeid Veiskarami, Yaser Mokhayeri, Afshin Nazari

Summary: The study found that Cichorium intybus can improve infarct size, episodes of ventricular ectopic beats, ventricular tachycardia, duration of ventricular tachycardia, and shorten QTc. It also stabilizes ST segment changes and increases heart rate during ischemia. Compared to the control and CI-200 group, blood pressure decreased in the CI-50 group. C. intybus increased serum superoxide dismutase, reduced lactate dehydrogenase activity, cardiac troponin I, and malondialdehyde levels. C. intybus also led to an increase in the expression of chemokine receptor type 4.

Design of a multi-epitope vaccine against cervical cancer using immunoinformatics approaches

Samira Sanami, Fatemeh Azadegan-Dehkordi, Mahmoud Rafieian-Kopaei, Majid Salehi, Maryam Ghasemi-Dehnoo, Mehran Mahooti, Morteza Alizadeh, Nader Bagheri

Summary: This study aimed to design a therapeutic vaccine against cervical cancer using reverse vaccinology, selecting E6 and E7 oncoproteins from HPV16 as target antigens for epitope prediction and constructing a multi-epitope vaccine with appropriate adjuvants. The physicochemical properties, antigenicity, and allergenicity of the vaccine construct were evaluated, and further analyses including molecular docking, MD simulation, and in silico cloning were performed. Results suggested the proposed vaccine could be effective, but further in vitro and in vivo experiments are needed for validation.
