Atherothrombosis is the underlying cause of several clinical manifestations, such as acute coronary syndromes, cerebrovascular disease, and peripheral artery disease, which together are the leading cause of death in the Western world. Proteins from vascular cells or atherosclerotic plaques that are present in plasma are modified along the different steps of atherosclerotic development and constitute target candidates for vascular research, particularly in the search for novel biological markers of cardiovascular risk. In this review, we summarize proteomic techniques and the most recent results obtained by application of these high-throughput strategies to cardiovascular samples.

Evaluation of the impact of an intradialytic exercise programme on sarcopaenia in very elderly haemodialysis patients

Maria Luz Sanchez-Tocino, Emilio Gonzalez-Parra, Blanca Miranda Serrano, Carolina Gracia-Iguacel, Ana Maria De-Alba-Penaranda, Antonio Lopez-Gonzalez, Marcos Garcia Olegario, Alberto Ortiz, Sebastian Mas-Fontao

Summary: The study found that sarcopaenia remains stable in stable very elderly persons on haemodialysis, while those who completed a lower limb exercise programme showed significant improvement in the five times sit-to-stand test and frailty scale. This suggests that short-term intradialytic exercise programmes can effectively improve physical function in this population.
