Syntheses, characterization and structures of heterodinuclear compound [(CuLBiIII)-L-II-Bi-1(NO3)(3)] (1), sandwich type heterotrinuclear compound [((CuL1)-L-II)(2)Ba-II(NO3)(2)]center dot 0.2H(2)O (2), heterotetranuclear compound [{(CuLPbII)-L-II-Pb-1(mu-NO3)(NO3)}(2)] (3) and heterohexanuclear [2 x 1 + 1 x 4] cocrystal [((UO2)-O-VI)(2)(mu-H2O)(2)(NO3)(4)]center dot 4[(CuL1)-L-II subset of(H2O)] (4) are described in this investigation (H2L1 = N, N'-ethylenebis(3-ethoxysalicylaldiimine)). Compounds 1 and 4 crystallize in orthorhombic P2(1)2(1)2(1) and triclinic P-(1) over bar systems, respectively, while the space group of compounds 2 and 3 is monoclinic P2(1)/c. The structure of 1 consists of a diphenoxo-bridged (CuBiIII)-Bi-II dinuclear core containing three chelating nitrates and a 10-coordinate bismuth(III) centre. The dinuclear cores are self-assembled to two dimensions through intermolecular nitrate oxygen center dot center dot center dot copper(II) semicoordination and weak C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. Compound 2 is a double-decker (CuBaCuII)-Ba-II-Cu-II system in which a barium(II) ion is sandwiched between two mononuclear [(CuL1)-L-II] moieties. The barium(II) centre is 11-coordinate, four phenoxo and four ethoxy oxygen atoms and one chelating and one monodentate nitrate ions. Compound 3 is a tetranuclear system (dimer of two dinuclear moieties) in which one nitrate is chelating, while the second nitrate behaves as both a chelating and bridging ligand. The lead(II) centre is 9-coordinate in this compound. Compound 4 is a [2 x 1 + 1 x 4] cocrystal of one diaqua-bridged diuranyl(VI) moiety, containing two chelating nitrates and 8-coordinated hexagonal bipyramidal uranium(VI) centres and four inclusion species [(CuL1)-L-II subset of(H2O)]. The governing factor for the self-assembled cocrystallization in 4 are the C-H center dot center dot center dot pi and C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. The compounds reported in this investigation and other heteronuclear systems derived from N, N'-ethylenebis(3-ethoxysalicylaldiimine) indicate that this ligand system is an important example which gives rise to structurally diverse heteronuclear compounds. In addition to the structural diversity, the structural resemblance of bismuth(III) with lanthanides(III) and utilization of noncovalent interactions to form self-assembly and cocrystals are the major outcomes of the present investigations.

A Mixed Valence CoIICoIII2 Field-Supported Single Molecule Magnet: Solvent-Dependent Structural Variation

Susanta Hazra, Cyril Rajnak, Jan Titis, M. Fatima C. Guedes da Silva, Roman Boca, Armando J. L. Pombeiro

Summary: The reaction of Schiff base N,N'-ethylene bis(salicylaldimine), CoCl2·6H2O, and [Ph2SnCl2] in acetone produces a mixed valence compound. The structural features of the resulting organometallic systems are dependent on the solvent used. Compound 1 exhibits slow magnetic relaxation behavior and is classified as a single molecule magnet.

Urea and thiourea based coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks: Synthesis, structure and applications

Anirban Karmakar, Susanta Hazra, Armando J. L. Pombeiro

Summary: Coordination polymers (CPs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) constructed by self-assembly of metal ions and multidentate organic linkers have shown significant potential in diverse applications such as gas adsorption and separation, catalysis, and sensing. The tunability of functional organic ligands is crucial for the design of CPs/MOFs, and the incorporation of urea and thiourea groups has attracted considerable attention due to their conformational flexibility and strong hydrogen bonding capabilities. This review summarizes the recent developments in urea and thiourea functionalized frameworks, discussing their synthesis, structure, and applications in gas adsorption and separation, catalysis, and sensing.

Bis(3-aminobenzenesulfonato-N)-diaqua-bis(N,N'-dimethylformamide-O)-copper(II)

Susanta Hazra, Anirban Karmakar

Summary: The reaction between 3-aminobenzenesulfonic acid and Cu(NO3)(2)& BULL;2.5H(2)O in H2O/DMF solution produces a new copper(II) complex. The crystal structure analysis reveals that the complex has a distorted octahedral geometry. Comparison with a known copper(II) complex shows that they have the same empirical formula and coordinated solvents, but different structures.

Anion-exchange synthesis of an MnCo2S4 electrocatalyst towards facilitated ultralong hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic and alkaline media

Abu Talha Aqueel Ahmed, Sankar Sekar, Shubhangi S. Khadtare, Nurul Taufiqu Rochman, Bathula Chinna, Abu Saad Ansari

Summary: In this study, MnCo2S4 nanosheet catalyst was successfully synthesized and found to exhibit superior performance in hydrogen evolution. Compared to MnCo2S4, MnCo2S4 showed low overpotentials, moderate Tafel slope, and excellent sustainability. The outstanding performance can be attributed to the increased number of electrochemically active sites and enhanced electronic conductivity on the catalyst surface.

Unravelling the structure of the CSD cocrystal network using a fast near-optimal bipartisation algorithm for large networks

Tom E. de Vries, Elias Vlieg, Rene de Gelder

Summary: Networks are important for describing relationships between people, roads between cities, reactions between chemicals, and other interactions. Bipartiteness, dividing the network into two groups, can facilitate the study of the network's structure. We have developed an algorithm that can find a near-optimal bipartisation within a reasonable time frame and used it to uncover the hidden structure of the CSD cocrystal network.
