Considerable efforts have been made to elucidate non-Hodgkin lymphoma's (NHL) etiology during the last decades. Some evidence points to an association with reproductive factors, as incidence rates for most NHL subtypes are usually higher in men than in women, and several subtypes express hormonal receptors. Although the evidence is not compelling, some studies show an inverse association with gravidity. Associations with postmenopausal hormone therapy are usually derived from unopposed estrogen use, rather than for the combination of estrogen with progestin, but these findings vary by study design. Inconsistencies in the results are likely due to the complex relationship between reproductive, biological, and sociodemographic factors, as well as to study limitations. Elucidating the role of hormonal factors should provide clues for therapeutic options and public health decisions. We provide an overview of the available evidence on reproductive factors in NHL etiology, underscoring potential sources of discrepancies and bias. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Borras, Laura Costas, Ramon Cleries

Summary: This study predicts a decline in ovarian cancer incidence and mortality rates in Catalonia by 2030, particularly among women aged 45 years and above. The risk of developing ovarian cancer decreases with later birth year, though there is a rebound among women born in the 1980s. Decreased mortality rates were observed during the period of diagnosis and death, but older women still have higher ovarian cancer mortality compared to other age groups.

The Impact of Surgical Practice on Oncological Outcomes in Robot-Assisted Radical Hysterectomy for Early-Stage Cervical Cancer, Spanish National Registry

Coronado, Antonio Gil-Moreno

Summary: In this study, the impact of surgical practice on oncological outcomes among women who underwent robot-assisted radical hysterectomy for early-stage cervical cancer was assessed. Factors such as higher surgical volume, participation in clinical trials, use of MRI for diagnosis, sentinel lymph node biopsies, and a favorable learning curve were found to significantly affect oncological outcomes. These findings suggest that surgical practice plays a crucial role not only in robot-assisted surgery but also in laparoscopic and open surgeries for the treatment of cervical cancer.

Summary: After adjusting for potential confounders, an inverse but not statistically significant association was found between night shift work and endometrial cancer (OR=0.64; 95% CI=0.35 to 1.16). The associations were independent of shift type (permanent or rotating nights) or duration of night work. No statistically significant association was observed between endometrial cancer and sleep duration, while inconsistent patterns were seen for chronotype and endometrial cancer risk.

Summary: To mitigate the burden of endometrial cancer, risk stratification can help target interventions. The study developed risk prediction models using data from postmenopausal White women aged 45-85 years. The models based on epidemiologic factors alone successfully identified women at high risk of endometrial cancer, with limited improvements from genetic factors.

Summary: This study developed an automatable triage test for cervical screening that is highly sensitive and specific in predicting the risk of progression to CIN3+ in HPV+ patients. The test demonstrated a sensitivity of 100% for detecting invasive cancer and 78% for detecting CIN3, with a specificity of 90%. It also identified 52% of women aged 30 and above with a negative cytology index sample who were later diagnosed with CIN3 within 1-4 years.
