Summary: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a common complication of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but there are no blood biomarkers available to identify PH in COPD patients. This study investigated whether circulating angiogenic factors and cytokines could serve as biomarkers for COPD-PH patients. The results showed that elevated TIMP-1 may serve as a circulating biomarker for diagnosing PH among COPD patients.

Summary: The study found that long-term exposure to fine particulate matter is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality among adults with COPD, especially in low exposure scenarios. The results suggest that current regulations may not be sufficient in protecting individuals with COPD from the negative effects of air pollution.

Summary: Chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are important factors in global mortality and morbidity, accounting for approximately 6% of total deaths worldwide. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as promising diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers for CRDs, playing crucial roles in inflammation-related pathways in asthma and COPD. Their deregulation in various biofluids and cells of patients, as well as their involvement in histopathological changes and treatment response, highlight the potential of miRNAs as prognostic tools and therapeutic targets in these respiratory diseases.

Summary: Exacerbations in COPD significantly impact disease progression, comorbidities, wellbeing, and mortality. They represent a major socioeconomic burden. Current definitions of exacerbations focus on worsening respiratory symptoms, but other factors can also contribute. Objective measurements like blood counts and C-reactive protein should be used to improve accuracy in diagnosis. Acute management includes interventions like corticosteroids, antibiotics, and non-invasive ventilation. Long-term prevention strategies, such as inhaled therapy and tailored approaches based on clinical phenotypes, are needed to better manage exacerbations.

Summary: Endoscopic lung volume reduction (ELVR) is recognized as a beneficial treatment for COPD patients, improving symptoms, quality of life, lung function, and survival. However, it is not widely offered in Australia and New Zealand, and there is room to improve awareness among general practitioners and physicians.

Summary: Pulmonary actinomycosis is a rare infection caused by the bacterial species actinomyces. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the disease, including its epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment. The analysis of relevant literature reveals that pulmonary actinomycosis has become rarer due to the widespread use of penicillins. However, it remains a disease with potentially severe complications and further research is needed in several areas, such as the impact of immunosuppression from newer immunotherapies.

Summary: Chronic airway diseases, including asthma and COPD, are prevalent in developing countries. Despite extensive guidelines for prevention and treatment, their value in precision medicine is limited. AI and ML techniques have been used to mine medical data for clinical practice, but their impact in asthma and COPD is still relatively low.

Summary: This study found that patients with concurrent opioid and benzodiazepine use were more likely to experience opioid-related overdose. Longer duration, higher frequency, and larger daily dose of concurrent use were associated with increased likelihood of overdose. Policymakers and healthcare providers should take measures to prevent concurrent use except when medically necessary.

Summary: The case-crossover design and its variants were systematically reviewed to compare design and analysis choices by medication type. A total of 114 case-crossover, case-time-control, and case-case-time-control studies focusing on medication exposures were included. The results showed that using the case-crossover design to evaluate non-transient medication remains common in pharmacoepidemiology, but some studies did not apply recommended methods to address biases. Therefore, researchers should make appropriate design and analysis choices when using the case-crossover design to evaluate non-transient medication exposures.
