Summary: This study investigated the prevalence, incidence rate, and clinical characteristics of occupational contact dermatitis (OCD), including contact sensitization, in hairdressing apprentices in Croatia. The results showed that the prevalence of OCD was 50.3% over 3 years, and the incidence rate was 32.3/100 person-years. Contact sensitization was found in 30.3% of the apprentices, with 71.4% of them sensitized to specific hairdressing chemicals, particularly PPD.

Summary: Hand eczema is significantly associated with frequent handwashing, with washing hands at least 8-10 times daily increasing the risk. However, the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer is not significantly related to hand eczema risk. Therefore, it is important to emphasize proper hand care practices when implementing hand hygiene measures.

Summary: By using skin tape strip samples combined with whole transcriptome sequencing, the study found differences in gene expression profiles of hand eczema patients in different areas. The largest molecular differences between patients with and without atopic dermatitis were found in nonlesional skin areas, and differences between allergic and irritant contact dermatitis included potential epidermal biomarkers.

Summary: Hand eczema is a common inflammatory skin disorder. This article aims to update the European Society of Contact Dermatitis guideline on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of hand eczema. Consensus was reached for several statements and management strategies through analysis of evidence for therapeutic and preventive interventions using a structured method of developing consensus. The updated guideline should improve the management of hand eczema.

Summary: This study investigated the clinical profile of glove-wearing patients with hand eczema and evaluated their sensitization profile to glove allergens and the value of testing the patients' own gloves. The results showed that testing with the European rubber series (ERS) is more effective in detecting glove allergy compared to the European baseline series (EBS). It is recommended to test all patients' gloves, including PVC gloves.

Summary: This study found that hairdressing tools in both rural and urban areas in the United States release nickel, which contributes to the high prevalence of contact dermatitis among hairdressers. Cheaper tools are more likely to release nickel. These findings highlight the need for clinicians to consider occupational nickel exposure when assessing patients with allergic contact dermatitis, emphasize the importance of using barrier protection, and support the implementation of legislation regulating common allergens.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate illness perceptions of patients with occupational hand eczema (HE) using Leventhal's Common-Sense Model (CSM). A qualitative approach was adopted and interviews were conducted with 36 patients. The results revealed that patients' perceptions of the disease involved multiple factors and consequences with a certain degree of complexity. These findings have important implications for patient education and counseling for occupational hand eczema.

Summary: This study assessed the skin characteristics of hairdresser apprentices, finding a significant prevalence of skin symptoms and history of atopy. Clinical examination revealed skin changes in some apprentices, and OHSI score was positively correlated with hand TEWL and skin pH. The study suggests the need for enhanced preventive examinations before enrollment in hairdressing schools.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of hand eczema in the Polish female population and its association with disinfectant usage during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study found that hand eczema was more prevalent in younger adults, and increased disinfectant usage exacerbated the symptoms. Respondents with a dermatological history were more susceptible to new skin symptoms during the pandemic, and quality of life was significantly impacted.

Summary: This study explored whether the use of the moderate sensitizer 2-methoxymethyl-PPD (ME-PPD) can reduce the occupational contact allergy risk for hairdressers. Results showed that ME-PPD has a lower likelihood of sensitization compared to PPD and PTD, indicating better protection for hairdressers against hair dye-related contact allergy.

Summary: This study evaluated the construct validity and reliability of the patient version of Hand Eczema Severity Index (HECSI) in assessing hand eczema severity. The results showed a strong correlation and very good absolute agreement between patient-HECSI and physician-HECSI assessments. Therefore, the patient-HECSI can be used by patients as a patient-reported outcome to assess their personal hand eczema severity.

Summary: A retrospective study in a Danish tertiary dermatology department found that allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in the eye region caused by topical eye medications is difficult to diagnose and may be overlooked. The study identified phenylephrine, timolol, and ketotifen as the main culprits of contact allergy to topical eye allergens/medications. Patients often had previous diagnoses of cataract or glaucoma and reported multiple previous reactions, with symptoms including edema, erythema, and dermatitis in the eye region.

Summary: This study examined the usefulness of various inflammation biomarkers in personalizing biologic treatment for psoriasis patients. It was found that the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels could serve as predictive biomarkers for treatment response to TNF-alpha inhibitor therapy. The study also measured other biomarkers such as TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta, IFN-alpha, IL-17A, IL-6, soluble IL-6 receptor (sIL-6R), and soluble IL-6 signal transducer (sIL-6ST) in different patient groups.

Summary: Diabetes devices used for insulin delivery and blood glucose measurement often cause skin problems, such as eczema and wounds. This study aimed to provide evidence-based information on the efficacy of a basic skin care program in preventing these skin problems. The results showed that the program partially prevented diabetes device-induced skin reactions, but additional preventive strategies are needed for optimized prevention.
