This paper reports a one-year study on the project of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) for seamless science inquiry in a primary school in Hong Kong. BYOD in this study refers to the technology model where students bring a personally owned mobile device with various apps and embedded features to use anywhere, anytime for the purpose of learning. The study aims at investigating (a) what advancement of content knowledge students made in their science inquiry in a seamless learning environment supported by their own mobile device; (b) how the students advanced their content knowledge in science inquiry; and (c) what students' perception is regarding their learning experience supported by their own mobile devices. The topic of inquiry was The Anatomy of Fish. Data collection included pre- and post-domain tests, self-reported questionnaire, student artifacts, class observations and field notes. Content analysis and a student artifact tracing approach were adopted in the data analysis to examine and trace students' knowledge advancement. The research findings show that the students advanced their understanding of the anatomy of fish well beyond what was available in the textbook and they developed positive attitude toward seamless science inquiry supported by their own mobile devices. A review of how class orchestration with technology has been conducted for pedagogical practices

Yanjie Song

Summary: Class orchestration with technology has gained increasing attention in the past decade, yet there is still a lack of comprehensive understanding of the research in this area. Two main approaches to class orchestration were identified: one focusing on instructional design with technology, and the other on the development and implementation of systems or tools for orchestrating pedagogical practices. A systematic review of 43 studies published from 2010 to 2019 revealed common and different features of the studies on class orchestration, as well as discussed issues and implications for future research.

Investigating the impact of a mobile learner-generated-content tool on pupils' after-school English vocabulary behavioural learning patterns, learning performance and motivation: a case study

Yanjie Song, Hiroaki Ogata, Yin Yang, Kousuke Mouri

Summary: This paper presents a case study that examines the impact of a mobile learner-generated content (m-LGC) tool on the after-class English vocabulary learning patterns, performance, and motivation of primary school students in Hong Kong. The study involved 34 grade 4 students from two classes. Data collection included learning logs, pre-and post-tests, and questionnaires. The results indicate that students in the active group (AG) demonstrated varied learning patterns, showed significant improvement in performance and increased motivation, whereas those in the passive group (PG) did not experience significant changes in these areas.

A Systematic Review of Technology-Enhanced Self-Regulated Language Learning

Yin Yang, Yun Wen, Yanjie Song

Summary: This systematic review examines 34 empirical studies on technology-enhanced self-regulated language learning (SRLL) from 2011 to 2020. The findings reveal diverse characteristics of these studies, a dominance of quantitative methods, a focus on students' outcomes rather than processes, and the role of technology in supporting the performance phase of SRLL. These findings have implications for using technology to facilitate and examine the holistic process of students' SRLL.

What seams have been bridged in seamless vocabulary learning?- A review of the literature

Yanjie Song, Gwo-Jen Hwang

Summary: This literature review examines the field of seamless vocabulary learning studies, focusing on the methodologies, learning outcomes, and trends within the field. The findings indicate that most studies concentrate on the seamless features of ubiquitous and continuous creation of artifacts, as well as situated and personalized learning. However, there is a lack of research on instructional designs that promote knowledge synthesis and the application of multiple language skills. Further research is needed to explore these areas, particularly in secondary education.

Supporting the monitoring of the digital capacity of schools through optimal shortening of the SELFIE tool

Romina Cachia, Artur Pokropek, Nikoleta Giannoutsou

Summary: This article introduces a shortened version of the European Commission's SELFIE tool for measuring the digital capacity of schools. Two shorter measurement instruments, called midi-SELFIE and mini-SELFIE, are proposed based on the original tool. The validity and uses of these shortened versions are explored through various cases and compared to the complete instrument. The results suggest that the shortened versions of SELFIE are reliable alternatives for specific purposes.
