This paper addresses the increasing demand in industry for methods to analyze and visualize multimodal data involving a spectral modality. Two data modalities are used: high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (XCT) for structural characterization and low-resolution X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectral data for elemental decomposition. We present InSpectr, an integrated tool for the interactive exploration and visual analysis of multimodal, multiscalar data. The tool has been designed around a set of tasks identified by domain experts in the fields of XCT and XRF. It supports registered single scalar and spectral datasets optionally coupled with element maps and reference spectra. InSpectr is instantiating various linked views for the integration of spatial and non-spatial information to provide insight into an industrial component's structural and material composition: views with volume renderings of composite and individual 3D element maps visualize global material composition; transfer functions defined directly on the spectral data and overlaid pie-chart glyphs show elemental composition in 2D slice-views; a representative aggregated spectrum and spectra density histograms are introduced to provide a global overview in the spectral view. Spectral magic lenses, spectrum probing and elemental composition probing of points using a pie-chart view and a periodic table view aid the local material composition analysis. Two datasets are investigated to outline the usefulness of the presented techniques: a 3D virtually created phantom with a brass metal alloy and a real-world 2D water phantom with insertions of gold, barium, and gadolinium. Additionally a detailed user evaluation of the results is provided.

Phase-contrast and dark-field imaging for the inspection of resin-rich areas and fiber orientation in non-crimp vacuum infusion carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers

Jonathan Glinz, Jan Sleichrt, Daniel Kytyr, Santhosh Ayalur-Karunakaran, Simon Zabler, Johann Kastner, Sascha Senck

Summary: The study presents a multimodal approach to quantify and visualize fiber orientation and resin-rich areas in carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers manufactured by vacuum infusion. The use of TLGI-XCT provides enhanced contrast between polymer matrix and carbon fibers at lower spatial resolutions, facilitating the assessment of resin-rich areas. The combination of DPC and DFC helps in quantifying resin-rich areas and understanding their distribution patterns within the composite material.

Influence of rheocasting and rare earth metals on the 3D-microstructure of ZK60 Mg-alloy measured by multiscale X-ray computed tomography

Johann Kastner, Stefan Zaunschirm, Sarah Rendl, Erenilton Pereira da Silva

Summary: This study investigated the internal architecture and microstructure of cast and hot rolled ZK60 alloys with different rare earth metal content. The results showed that the addition of rare earth metals improved the homogeneity of the microstructure, while rheocasting led to a more uniform distribution of Zr-rich particles.

Investigation of opening eye defects and effects of different ripening profiles on eye structure in semi-hard cheese using X-ray micro-computed tomography

Jaqueline Auer, Michael Reiter, Sascha Senck, Andreas Reiter, Johann Kastner, Katrin Mathmann

Summary: The presence of eyes in Swiss-type cheese is an important indicator of quality. Research has shown that the duration of pre-maturing and the maturing temperature can influence the formation of eyes, and not all eyes have the same growth potential.

Assessing the effect of sample orientation on dimensional X-ray computed tomography through experimental and simulated data

Herminso Villarraga-Gomez, Artem Amirkhanov, Christoph Heinzl, Stuart T. Smith

Summary: This paper evaluates the dimensional accuracy of industrial X-ray computed tomography (CT) measurements in relation to sample orientation within the measurement volume. Experimental data is compared to simulated predictions, showing that optimal tilt angles can minimize measurement errors.

Probability of detection applied to X-ray inspection using numerical simulations

M. Yosifov, M. Reiter, S. Heupl, C. Gusenbauer, B. Froehler, R. Fernandez- Gutierrez, J. De Beenhouwer, J. Sijbers, J. Kastner, C. Heinzl

Summary: In this study, we use X-ray computed tomography (XCT) for in-line inspection of aluminum cylinder heads and apply and adapt the probability of detection (POD) methods. By using a simulation tool to generate virtual X-ray radiographs, the need for manufacturing specimens with known defect characteristics is eliminated. The virtual images are analyzed using an automated defect detection method to quantify defects. The hit/miss approach is used to create the defect curves. The results demonstrate the advantages of numerical simulations in quantifying and improving defect detection.

Kirkendall Effect in Twin-Roll Cast AA 3003 Aluminum Alloy

Jan Bajer, Stefan Zaunschirm, Bernhard Plank, Michaela Slapakova, Lucia Bajtosova, Miroslav Cieslar, Johann Kastner

Summary: Inhomogeneous structure with central segregation occurs in commercial twin-roll cast AA 3003 aluminum alloy, where segregations form as manganese, iron, and silicon-rich channels spread in the rolling direction. Diffusion of silicon during annealing leads to the formation and growth of voids due to the Kirkendall effect.

cuPARE: parametric reconstruction of curved fibres from glass fibre-reinforced composites

Tim Elberfeld, Bernhard Froehler, Christoph Heinzl, Jan Sijbers, Jan De Beenhouwer

Summary: A new framework is proposed for reconstructing curved fibres from X-ray computed tomography data of glass fibre-reinforced composites. It can detect fibres in a low-dose, low-resolution CT scan, and estimate their parameters directly from a few high-resolution 2D projection images. The framework is validated on both simulated and real data, showing robustness to noise and requiring less than 10 high-resolution projections for accurate estimates. It can also improve existing estimation frameworks based on full 3D scans.
