Summary: The study found that the specific ion effects of Na+ and K+ were different on the growth of Ulva lactuca. Ulva lactuca showed better growth with high concentrations of NaCl, while KCl might have adverse effects on photosynthesis and cell wall. Summary: In this study, the crystal structure and functional properties of the E2-BeFx complex of pig kidney Na+,K+-ATPase are investigated. The complex resembles the E2P intermediate and is able to bind ADP/ATP and Na+. The results suggest a relation between E2-BeFx and the E*P intermediate in the functional cycle of Na+, K+-ATPase.

Summary: The Na+/K+-ATPase is a plasma membrane glycoprotein that exchanges intracellular Na+ for extracellular K+ by hydrolyzing ATP. The asymmetric distribution of Na+ and K+ is essential for cellular life. Current research indicates that Na+ becomes spontaneously occluded in the E1 dephosphorylated form of the Na+/K+-ATPase, showing positive interactions between binding sites. Adding ATP does not increase Na+ occlusion.

Summary: In 1915, Inada and Ido identified Leptospira sp. as the pathogen responsible for Weil's Disease, which was later confirmed to cause leptospirosis. The molecular mechanisms and interactions between bacterial components and the host, as well as the systemic dysfunctions, still need to be fully understood. Leptospirosis affects all animal species and involves a cellular mechanism common to all eukaryotes. Na/K-ATPase is targeted by the leptospiral endotoxin, leading to dysfunctions and organ disorders. Additionally, metabolic disorders and inflammatory responses are triggered during leptospirosis, involving various molecular mechanisms. Na/K-ATPase plays a critical role in the disease and can be a potential therapeutic target or an indicator of disease severity.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of short-term exposure to a low concentration of sediment-associated fipronil on the myocardial contractility of armored catfish. Fipronil exposure resulted in increased inotropism and acceleration of contractile kinetics, indicating better cardiac function. However, the high energetic cost of maintaining increased cardiac performance may make fish more susceptible to other stressors. These findings emphasize the need for regulations to protect the aquatic system from emerging contaminants such as fipronil.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of eugenol, menthol, and lidocaine as anesthetics on glucose levels and recovery times in zebrafish. The results showed that eugenol and menthol did not affect glucose levels, while lidocaine caused non-concentration-dependent hyperglycemia. Recovery times were similar for eugenol and menthol, but concentration-dependent for lidocaine. Eugenol and menthol were deemed safe and satisfactory for glucose analysis in zebrafish research, while lidocaine could introduce biases and safety concerns. Researchers should carefully consider the selection of anesthetics for reliable results in zebrafish assessments.

Summary: This study analyzed the toxic effects of Roundup Transorb (R) on the endangered Neotropical annual killifish Austrolebias charrua by evaluating molecular and biochemical biomarkers. The findings showed that exposure to Roundup significantly increased the production of reactive oxygen species, lipid peroxidation, and DNA damage in the fish's blood cells. It also decreased membrane fluidity. Gene expression analysis revealed alterations in genes associated with oxidative stress and antioxidant defense. This study provides new insights into adaptive mechanisms of A. charrua in response to Roundup, and it has important implications for environmental monitoring and aquatic toxicology assessment.

Summary: The influence of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the toxicity of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) in the intestine of common carp was investigated. The presence of MWCNTs significantly decreased intercellular zinc accumulation and altered the microbial community diversity and composition of the gut microbiota.

Summary: Environmental factors can cause cancer in both wild animals and humans. The use of polluted habitats provides opportunities to study cancer defense mechanisms, which can be influenced by genetic variation and natural selection. Flatfish species, specifically flounders, show higher resistance to pollution-induced cancer compared to dabs, with elevated pollutant metabolism and stronger tumor suppression mechanisms in their liver tissue. This suggests a potential hormetic upregulation of tumor suppression or stronger natural selection pressure for cancer resistance in flounders. Wild species offer valuable insights into understanding the nature and evolution of natural cancer defense mechanisms.
