The effect of the introduction of an agrosylvopasture (SASP) system on the changes in the carbon (C) of the soil and its lability were studied. Since 1993, this system has been annually implanted in Paracatu, MG. It was planted under eucalyptus forest abandoned after three cuts, when the brachiaria grass was established. The eucalyptususes were planted at 10 x 4 m spacing, and the following crops have been grown between the lines: rice in the first year, soybean in the second, and brachiaria in the third. After the third year, pasture of the meat cattle begins on brachiaria and remains until the end of the system cycle that was foreseen for the 11th year. A savannah area and another one with eucalyptusus under a conventional system were used as references to natural condition and the way the area is used before plantation of the SASP, respectively. Some samples aged 1, 21 3, 6, and 10 years were collected in SASP. According to the obtained results, the following conclusions were drawn: (i) the C contents and stocks were affected before and during the plantation of the SASP by the use and management of SASP, as they were reduced in the first years of the system establishment but improved at the 10th year; (ii) the C from the particulate free light fraction (CFLLP) that was extracted by potassium pertriangate (KMnO4) was sensitive to the use and management, and so reflected the changes in total organic C (TOC); (iii) the more labile fractions of C that were extracted at different concentrations of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) satisfactorily reflected the changes in both use and management, whereas the less labile fractions were just slightly affected; and (iv) the C management index (IMC) calculated from CFLLP was the most sensitive to the changes in use and management. However, when calculated from the C fraction I extracted by 3M H2SO4 (C-F1), it showed better reliability.

Influence of different tree species on autotrophic and heterotrophic soil respiration in a mined area under reclamation

Fernanda D. A. Valente, Lucas C. Gomes, Marllon F. Castro, Julio Cesar L. Neves, Ivo R. Silva, Teogenes S. de Oliveira

Summary: The study found that there was no significant change in soil CO2 efflux among different tree species, but heterotrophic soil respiration contributed to 64% of total CO2 efflux and was associated with litter decomposition. Increases in soil moisture had the most influence on CO2 efflux.

Model for determining nutritional and non-nutritional limitations of Grande Naine banana in the Brazilian semiarid region1

Vagner A. Rodrigues Filho, Julio C. L. Neves, Sergio L. R. Donato, Bruno V. C. Guimaraes

Summary: This study modeled and determined nutritional and non-nutritional limitations of Grande Naine banana grown in Cear? and Bahia states, Brazil, and found that nutritional factors limited yield by 11.17% and 14.79%, while non-nutritional factors limited by 30.11% and 29.41% respectively. In Grande Naine banana, non-nutritional factors are more yield-limiting than nutritional factors.

Litterfall production, decomposition and litter nutrient contents in a mined area revegetated with different forest species

Fernanda Daniele de Almeida Valente, Marllon Fialho de Castro, Jose Ferreira Lustosa Filho, Aldo Teixeira Lopes, Silvano Rodrigues Borges, Lucas Carvalho Gomes, Julio Cesar Lima Neves, Ivo Ribeiro da Silva, Teogenes Senna de Oliveira

Summary: Afforestation is the preferred technique for restoring ecosystem functions in bauxite mining areas. This study found that planting a mixed of 16 native tree species can accelerate the recovery of soil organic matter and nutrient cycles, producing higher litterfall yields and better nutritional quality. Therefore, mixed native trees can be a promising option for reactivation of nutrient cycling and organic matter formation in mined areas of bauxite in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.

Nutrient reference values for 'Prata- Ana' banana in improved chemical fertility soils

Marcio Adriano Santos, Sergio Luiz Rodrigues Donato, Julio Cesar Lima Neves, Pedro Ricardo Rocha Marques, Marlon Cristian Toledo Pereira, Maria Geralda Vilela Rodrigues

Summary: The study aimed to establish nutrient reference values for 'Prata-Ana' banana in improved fertility soil using different diagnostic methods. The results showed that the established values were higher than those reported in the literature, and the Mathematical Chance method was the most accurate in interpreting nutrient contents in the leaves.

Nutrient reference values for 'BRS Platina' banana in improved fertility soils

Marcio Adriano Santos, Sergio Luiz Rodrigues Donato, Julio Cesar Lima Neves, Pedro Ricardo Rocha Marques, Marlon Cristian Toledo Pereira, Maria Geralda Vilela Rodrigues

Summary: The study aimed to establish nutritional reference values for 'BRS Platina' banana in improved fertility soil, using different methods to obtain optimal values with a degree of convergence. Therefore, the adjusted reference values can be used to interpret foliar analysis of 'BRS Platina' bananas in improved fertility soils.

Par ticao de nutrientes e eficiencia nutricional da mangueira cv. Palmer em funcao da idade das plantas no Vale do Sao Francisco, Brazil

Roberto Lustosa Silva, Renildes Lucio Ferreira Fontes, Julio Cesar Lima Neves, Augusto Miguel Nascimento Lima, Emanuelle Merces Barros Soares, Camila Israela Freire Silva Carvalho, Italo Herbert Lucena Cavalcante

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional efficiency of mango plants of Palmer cultivar grown in sand soils at Sao Francisco Valley, Northwest Brazil. Macronutrients N and K showed the highest increase over the years, while micronutrients Mn and Fe accumulated the most in the plants. The canopy of the mango Palmer plants was found to be the compartment that accumulated the most macro and micronutrients.

Influence of different seabird species on trace metals content in Antarctic soils

Marllon F. Castro, Martin Meier, Julio C. L. Neves, Marcio R. Francelino, Carlos Ernesto G. R. Schaefer, Teogenes S. Oliveira

Summary: The behavior and feeding habits of different species of seabirds can influence the enrichment of trace metals in Antarctic soils. This study found that the concentrations of Cr and Hg in the soil were positively correlated with P, TOC, and TN, indicating the biotransport of these metals by seabirds. Soils influenced by penguins showed higher levels of P, TOC, TN, Cr, and Hg.

Universality of Kenworthy and DRIS norms for prata and cavendish bananas grown in two environments

Vagner Alves Rodrigues Filho, Julio Cesar Lima Neves, Sergio Luiz Rodrigues Donato, Bruno Vinicius Castro Guimaraes

Summary: Tissue analysis results should not be universally interpreted using nutrient standards, as differences in climate and soil can affect nutrient availability. Specific norms for each site and cultivar are recommended for accurate nutritional diagnosis of Prata-Ana and Grande Naine banana plants grown in different environments. Variability in norms is higher in Ceara than in Bahia, with less convergence for Prata-Ana compared to Grande Naine.

Marcio Luiz dos Santos, Helio Garcia Leite, Valeria Santos Cavalcante, Loane Vaz Fernandes, Julio Cesar Lima Neves

Summary: This study aimed to adjust allometric equations to estimate the accumulation of biomass and nutrient contents in teak plantations in the central region of Brazil. The equations adjusted for the four sets of stands, all with elevated predictive capacity, did not differ among each other based on an identity test. It is recommended to use a robust equation adjusted with data from all stands to obtain estimates with a high degree of accuracy.
