Summary: A new class of pyridine-based spiropyran exhibits reversible photoinduced switching between closed SP and ring-open merocyanine states. In a condensed crystalline monolayer on graphite, SP can be quantitatively converted to MC under UV irradiation, while in solution only about 10% of SP can transform to MC due to a photostationary state. By applying an electric field with an STM tip, single molecules can be reversibly switched between SP and MC forms in their condensed phases without any threshold voltage at ambient conditions. The microscopic structure of submonolayer films of SP and MC are investigated using AFM and STM.

Summary: The bidirectional photoswitching of arylazopyrazoles with visible light is achieved by incorporating pyrrolidine and piperidine in the ortho-position of the phenyl ring, leading to red-shifted absorption maxima and increased molar absorption coefficients. This allows for E -> Z isomerization with blue light (λ = 465 nm) and Z -> E isomerization with red light (λ = 600 nm). N-methylation of the pyrazole results in excellent thermal stability of the Z isomer.

Summary: Incorporating light-responsive azobenzene into polyelectrolytes allows for the control of conductivity by utilizing photoinduced changes in steric interactions and polarity. The reversible isomerization of the azobenzene moiety leads to a significant change in ion conductivity, and this change depends on the polymer composition. These findings suggest that azobenzene can serve as a versatile functional unit for regulating the conductivity of polymeric materials using light.

Summary: A novel formulation of cationic liposomes was studied by mixing dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) with tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide gemini surfactants with different alkane spacer groups lengths attached to their ammonium head-groups. The physicochemical characterization of the cationic liposomes was obtained by combining experimental results with molecular dynamic simulations, in order to understand their structural configuration. The gemini surfactants partition into the lipid bilayer of DPPC liposomes, altering the colloidal stability and phase transition properties.

Summary: This study demonstrates that microgels trapped at a solid wall can generate liquid flow and transport over long distances. The flow is induced by the response of microgels to irradiation, causing changes in their volume and creating concentration and osmotic pressure gradients that drive the flow. The direction and strength of the flow depend on the irradiation parameters and the amount of solute absorbed by the microgels.

Summary: Morphologically different gold nanoparticle aggregates were prepared on macroscopic surfaces covered with a layer of polydopamine. The extent of particle aggregation and size distribution could be controlled by the reduction times of Au(III), triggered by the redox active polymer. The prepared surfaces were used as solvent-free condensed phases to investigate the photochemical and thermal isomerization processes of attached azobenzenes.

Summary: In this study, 22-oxahemiporphycene molecules were investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculations. Unlike other molecular switches, these molecules can exist in three different tautomers due to their asymmetry and three inequivalent binding positions of a hydrogen atom. The different tautomers can be identified from the appearance on the surface, and tunneling electrons can be used to tautomerize single molecules in a controllable way.

Summary: This study synthesized biochar based on sapropel and investigated the effects of chemical modification on its textural characteristics, acid-base properties, and adsorption properties. The results showed that the chemical modification increased the fraction of micropores, specific surface area, and changed the surface properties of biochar. The experiment also revealed that biochar pretreated with alkali exhibited the maximum adsorption capacity for copper ions. A conceptual model identifying the mechanisms of copper adsorption on sapropel-based biosorbent was proposed.

Summary: The corrosion inhibitory potency of two new pyrimidine-pyrazole derivatives, PPA and PPC, was evaluated for mild steel in 1 M HCl. The results showed enhanced inhibition activities with increased concentration, reaching maximal values of 91.15% and 92.39% for PPA and PPC, respectively. However, the mitigation potency decreased with increasing temperature. SEM and XPS analysis revealed that PPA and PPC adsorbed on the mild steel surface, forming a shielding layer that prevented the dissolution of the steel in the acidic solution.

Summary: This study aims to develop a nano-biofungicide comprising of volatile essential oil molecules to enhance its efficacy in the field of agriculture through easily scalable green synthesis technique. The nano biofungicide was prepared through one pot hot melt ultrasonication technique with easy water dispersibility and long term stability. The physico-chemical analysis revealed that, nano bio-fungicides were amorphous sphere-shaped nanoparticles with low melting point. The encapsulation efficiency of major components of essential oil was determined, and it was found that they followed Higuchi model of release kinetics. The essential oil loaded nanostructured lipid carrier showed significantly higher mycelial growth inhibition compared to pure essential oil, indicating enhanced bio-efficacy.
