Summary: Excessive gestational weight gain during pregnancy has negative effects on the health of offspring, which is mediated by epigenetic modifications and changes in gene expression. This study investigated the association between gestational weight gain and DNA methylation in umbilical cord tissue, and examined whether DNA methylation and the expression of corresponding genes were related to obesity-related parameters in 6-year-old children. The results showed that certain methylated CpG sites in umbilical cord tissue were associated with gestational weight gain, and higher levels of methylation in SETD8 and RPTOR genes and lower levels of methylation in SLIT3 gene were associated with an increased risk of obesity in offspring. The findings suggest that epigenetic changes in umbilical cord tissue could be potential early biomarkers for preventing childhood overweight and obesity.

Summary: This study compared initial clinical and laboratory parameters, as well as outcomes of mortality and rebleeding, in pediatric patients with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding who underwent early UGIE (<12 hours) versus late UGIE (12-24 hours). The results showed no significant differences in outcomes between the early and late UGIE groups, suggesting that UGIE can be safely performed after 12-24 hours without harming the patient and optimizing clinical stabilization and treatment.

Summary: The study described the implementation of the CW campaign among medical students in the pediatrics clerkship using different teaching strategies and evaluated students' perception and performance. Results showed that students exposed to simulation training had significantly higher scores in the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and behavioral items compared to students who only watched the online video. Simulation training had a greater impact on undergraduate students' behavioral aspects and was well accepted by participants.

Summary: The aim of this study was to review pediatric triage systems in emergency departments, evaluating their validity and reliability. A total of 105 articles on pediatric triage systems in 12 countries were evaluated, with color-stratified triage systems and alert systems being the two main types. The review found that MTS, PaedCTAS, ESI version 4, PEWS, POPS, and PAT are valid and reliable for pediatric emergency services. However, cultural adaptation and validation studies are needed when implementing these systems in Brazil.

Summary: This study analyzed the clinical and laboratory aspects of children who developed arterial ischemic stroke after varicella, as well as their neurocognitive performance after four years. The results showed that the stroke symptoms improved in all the patients after four years, and there were no recurrences. The detection of varicella-zoster-virus-DNA and vascular lesions in magnetic resonance angiography were not conclusive for the diagnosis of post-varicella arterial ischemic stroke.

The study found that pediatric patients with COVID-19 had more severe symptoms compared to those with other respiratory viruses, such as fever, headache, and pneumonia.
