Summary: This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for falls in elderly patients with visual impairment (VI) and assess the predictive performance of these factors. The results showed that gender, smoking, outdoor activities, waking up at night, balance and gait deficits, glaucoma, other retinal degenerations, and better eye visual acuity were independent risk factors for falls in elderly patients with VI. The developed predictive model and nomogram achieved a satisfying prediction of fall risk in these individuals.

Summary: The combination of vitamin D and calcium has a beneficial effect in preventing falls among elderly individuals, particularly those with 25(OH)D levels lower than 50 nmol/L. Vitamin D supplementation alone does not reduce the risk of falls in elderly individuals with 25(OH)D levels higher than 50 nmol/L.

Summary: Pilates may be effective in decreasing the risk of falls in older adults. Pilates intervention was found to improve functional mobility, mobility, gait, fear of falling and postural stability and therefore there is some evidence to suggest that Pilates reduces certain risk factors for falls in healthy older adults. However, there is an absence of high-quality evidence in regards to the impact of Pilates on reducing falls and further robust RCTs are needed.

Summary: Falls are common among older people in nursing homes, and various risk factors are associated with falls. Assessments of balance and mobility, medical condition, and use of medications should be included in fall risk assessments. Environmental risk factors still need to be explored. Tailored fall prevention strategies should focus on modifiable risk factors.

Summary: This systematic review identified risk factors for prospectively ascertained falls in older people with cognitive impairment living in the community. Balance deficits, poor mobility, slow gait speed, and depressive symptoms were found to be associated with fallers. Global cognition was not significantly associated with falls, suggesting interventions should focus on improving balance impairment. More high-quality research is needed to support these findings.

Summary: Older adults with markers of frailty are at higher risk of recurrent falls, with balance and mobility, medication, psychological, and sensory and neuromuscular factors playing important roles. Identifying and addressing these markers of frailty should be a frontline strategy in preventing recurrent falls, as they increase the risk by up to 53%.

Summary: Post-hospital falls are a significant health concern for older adults, with a high incidence rate. Previous falls, fractures, delirium, and neurological diseases are identified as the main risk factors. Future prevention strategies should focus on addressing these factors.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the risk factors associated with postoperative delirium in elderly urological patients. The results showed that a history of delirium, preoperative use of psychotropic drugs, and age are significant risk factors. These findings provide guidance for targeted preventive measures.

Summary: Reduced visual function, impaired stereoacuity, and decreased high spatial frequency contrast are significant risk factors for falls in older adults. Older adults with a hearing impairment are also at higher risk. Living in a less deprived area and socializing more outside of the home decrease the risk of falls.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of falls in adults with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The results showed that falls were common in RA patients, with risk factors including history of falls, history of fracture, walking aid use, dizziness, psychotropic medication use, antihypertensive medicine/diuretic use, taking four or more medicine, and higher HAQ score.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the relationship between frailty and falls in older adults and analyze the effect factors of this association. The results showed a significant association between frailty and falls among older adults. Factors such as gender, different frailty assessment tools, areas, level of national economic development, and year of publication may impact this association.

Summary: This study is the first to determine the prevalence of vulvovaginal candidiasis in Iranian women through a systematic review and meta-analysis. The overall prevalence of vulvovaginal candidiasis among Iranian women was 47%, with Candida albicans being the most prevalent etiologic agent. The use of oral contraceptive pills was identified as the predominant risk factor for developing vulvovaginal candidiasis, and vaginal cheese-like discharges were the predominant clinical manifestation in Iranian women with this condition.

Summary: The study systematically evaluated the risk factors of pulmonary infection in elderly patients with acute stroke, identifying age, type of stroke, conscious disturbance, dysphagia, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, COPD, hyperlipidemia, and other factors as independent risk factors. Further investigations are needed to confirm the relationship between atrial fibrillation, smoking history, and pulmonary infection risk.

Summary: This study found that a brief PBC exposure enhances cognitive inhibition performance on a Stroop task in males, mediated by increased parasympathetic cardiac control and cerebral oxygenation. However, the effects of PBC on cognitive function seem to differ in females, possibly due to different sensitivity to cold stimulation.

Summary: Whole-body cryotherapy is a non-pharmacological treatment that influences inflammatory events and has various benefits, such as improved sleep quality, faster neuromuscular recovery, and chronic pain relief. It may also have positive effects on mental health and cognitive functions. There have been concerns about its safety, but these concerns are often based on misunderstandings regarding the differences between whole-body cryotherapy and partial-body cryotherapy. This article reviews the literature and concludes that the safety risks associated with whole-body cryotherapy are within acceptable limits and can be prevented by following existing recommendations and guidelines.
