Summary: Antivenom is a crucial treatment for snake envenomation, but early adverse reactions pose significant limitations. A study found that all types of antivenom carry a risk of adverse reactions, making continuous observation and prompt treatment necessary.

Summary: The World Health Organization has recognized snakebite envenoming as a neglected tropical disease in need of urgent attention. However, there is a lack of research on the environmental risk factors, including outdoor temperature. This study investigates the relationship between short-term temperature and snakebites in Georgia, a biodiverse US state. The findings show that an increase in same-day maximum temperature is associated with an increased risk of venomous and non-venomous snakebites, with the strongest associations observed in the spring.

Summary: This study compared call characteristics from critical access hospitals (CAH) and larger, more urban hospitals (UH) received by a poison control center (PCC), finding significant differences in exposure characteristics and medical effects. Future research is needed to optimize PCC services for rural hospitals.

Summary: Research indicates that in the past decade, there has been an 18-fold increase in cannabis cases involving older users in PCC. Cases involving other preparations besides plant forms have increased rapidly in recent years, while cases of synthetic cannabinoids have decreased. Certain cannabis forms are associated with specific demographic and clinical characteristics, as well as medical outcomes.

Summary: This study analyzed the changing protective functions of forests in the upper plain of the Jizera Mts. since the second half of the 19th century, showing a shift in forest types from native stands to plantations and a change in the priority of protective forest functions.

Summary: The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) conducted a study on harmful blue-green algae exposures and compared it to public awareness of harmful algal blooms. The study found that call percentages for harmful blue-green algae exposures increased annually and that news publications on harmful algal blooms also increased. Higher call volumes in summer and certain geographic divisions were influenced by public awareness. The study suggests that ASPCA APCC call data could be used as a source of public health information.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the changes in fine-grained sediment provenance in eight high priority English catchments with varying flow conditions, and compare the estimated sediment source proportions with the targeted advice delivered to farmers. The research found that dominant sediment sources varied considerably between catchments, making it challenging to effectively target on-farm advice.

Summary: Tele-triage, a subset of telehealth services, is increasingly common and allows users to receive credible health advice from licensed professionals at home. This study explores the differences in the use of an animal poison control center (APCC) tele-triage service between veterinarians and the public, including toxicant type, animal demographics, availability of veterinary services, and seasonal and secular trends.

Summary: The study found that consulting a US poison control center was associated with shorter hospital stays for poisoned patients. The study analyzed data from 2010 to 2017 and found that pediatric patients had a greater reduction in hospital stays when a poison control center was consulted. PCC consultations were more likely to occur in cases involving children, adolescents, intentional overdoses, and women.

Summary: Vehicle exhaust is a significant contributor to atmospheric pollution in China. This study comprehensively evaluates the emission of major air pollutants and greenhouse gases from the transportation sector under different vehicle emission control policies in Hubei during 2015-2050, along with health outcomes. It highlights the need for innovation in mechanisms and technologies to mitigate pollution and generate health benefits.

Summary: Despite the increasing prescriptions of pregabalin in adults in France, unintended ingestions of pregabalin in children aged 6 and under are rare and result in minimal toxicity. Children without underlying neurological/cardiac diseases and not taking concomitant medications, who ingest <19.4 mg/kg of immediate-release pregabalin alone, can be safely monitored at home.

Summary: The abuse of tianeptine, a drug structurally similar to tricyclic antidepressants, has been on the rise in the United States since 2000, with a significant increase in poisoning cases observed in 2019. Most cases were due to withdrawal symptoms, with over half of the patients requiring hospital admission and a third being treated in the intensive care unit. Healthcare practitioners should be more vigilant as tianeptine usage may be increasing.
