Aim. To determine if growth patterns in healthy infants can identify associations with obesity at age 5 years. Method. Body mass index growth patterns from birth to 1 year were described for cohorts of children who were classified at 5 years as normal weight (n = 61), overweight (n = 47), obese (n = 41), and morbidly obese (n = 72). A longitudinal analysis of body mass index means based on the age postbirth was conducted and graphed. Results. Distinctions in growth patterns were evident before 1 year postbirth. Children who were normal weight at 5 years demonstrated a growth pattern in the first year that differed from children who were overweight, obese, or morbidly obese at 5 years. Conclusions. Obesity growth patterns were seen in infancy and are clinically important because identification of infants who do not fit a normal weight pattern can occur and thus guide individualized interventions in the first year postbirth while precursors of later health are still forming.

Predicting Childhood Obesity Based on Single and Multiple Well-Child Visit Data Using Machine Learning Classifiers

Pritom Kumar Mondal, Kamrul H. H. Foysal, Bryan A. A. Norman, Lisaann S. S. Gittner

Summary: Childhood obesity is a major public health concern in the United States, and early identification of obesity risk is crucial for prevention. Various methods, including regression analysis and machine learning-based classifications, have been developed to predict obesity in children. In this study, three machine learning approaches were proposed and applied to real data to predict childhood obesity at five years of age. The models achieved accuracy rates of 89%, 77%, and 89% for different scenarios, providing valuable decision support for healthcare professionals to reduce obesity-related complications and improve healthcare.

Summary: The exposome refers to factors an individual is exposed to across their life course and is constantly changing. This study aimed to translate spatial exposure to various factors with obesity prevalence to create actionable population-based constructs. Different factors were associated with obesity in areas of high and low prevalence, providing insights for further population or policy level studies.

A Standardized Matrix for Mental Health Diversion Program Reporting

Lisaann S. Gittner, Jeff A. Dennis

Summary: A matrix is proposed to standardize the reporting of mental health diversion programs and provide a framework for program evaluation. The current challenge is that program reports may overlook important contextual factors, limiting generalizability and comparability. Using a standard matrix framework helps to clearly list the components of the program, context, and community systems, facilitating evaluation and the creation of sustainable programs.

Summary: This article provides a summary of the research articles in the special edition of The Journal of Contemporary Justice. The research findings demonstrate the breakdown of processes and services in diversion-based programs at the intersection of criminal justice and health care systems. The lack of a transdisciplinary understanding and scattered reporting on diversion hinder effective implementation.

Diversion: A Systems Theory Perspective

Lisaann S. Gittner, Jeff A. Dennis, Robert E. E. Forbis Jr

Summary: There is a lack of normative theory for diverting justice-involved individuals with mental illness at the intersection of criminal justice and health care systems. This paper proposes a potential systems theory of diversion that explains the overlapping boundaries within and between these systems. The theoretical disconnect may fail to consider the impact of criminal justice diversion on the health care system. A unified systems theory of diversion is proposed to improve evaluation, comparability, sustainability, resource allocation, and outcomes of diversion programs.

Summary: This study aimed to identify gender-specific risk factors for myocardial infarction (MI) in rural West Texans. Results showed that systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, pulse, and smoking were significant risk factors for females, while glucose, age, body fat, and smoking were significant risk factors for males.

Summary: Despite a movement toward people-first language in the mental health field, stigma surrounding Substance Use Disorder (SUD) persists and creates barriers to treatment. Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), with its iatrogenic origins and power differentials, complicates stigma and barriers to treatment, emerging as a major theme in public health discourse.
