Summary: Childhood obesity prevalence has been increasing in recent decades, with evidence suggesting that rapid infant growth may contribute to this trend. A systematic review found positive associations between infant growth rate and overweight, obesity, BMI, waist circumference, and body composition in childhood. Further research is needed to determine which specific stages of infancy carry a greater risk of adverse childhood outcomes.

Summary: This study found that prenatal exposure to phthalates may be associated with lower birth weight but not with weight in childhood. However, the results regarding adiposity showed that prenatal exposure to phthalates may lead to lower adiposity at birth and higher adiposity at 3-4 years of age.

Summary: There is a correlation between body mass index (BMI) spectrum and complicated appendicitis and postoperative complications in pediatric patients. Underweight patients have a higher risk of complicated appendicitis, while overweight patients have a lower risk. Obesity, underweight, and interactions with preoperative white blood cells are associated with postoperative complications.

Summary: The CDC and WHO have separate growth charts for boys and girls, but there is a need for gender-neutral growth charts that can accommodate non-binary or transgender youth. Using statistical techniques and data from US surveys, the researchers developed age-adjusted, sex non-specific growth charts for height, weight, and BMI. These charts can be useful in assessing growth trajectories and weight classifications for transgender youth.

Summary: This study found that younger children have lower levels of obesity, while older children with a higher BMI percentile have higher levels of fat mass. The current BMI percentile cutoffs overdiagnose obesity in younger groups.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between intrauterine and postnatal growth patterns and infant body composition at 2 years of age. The results showed that both small-for-gestational age (SGA) and appropriate-for-gestational age (AGA) infants had higher fat mass at 12 months, while large-for-gestational age (LGA) infants had higher fat mass at 24 months. Furthermore, the weight and length at 12 months were positively associated with fat mass at 24 months.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using correction modeling to improve the accuracy of mother-reported child height and weight at 2 years. Correction modeling for BMI was conducted, and the indirect correction method showed better prediction of overweight status and agreement with measured values compared to the mother-reported measures.

Summary: In addition to obesity, being underweight may also have a negative impact on the severity of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) in children. Patients with underweight and severe obesity have worse disease outcomes in JIA, highlighting the importance of weight control in managing the disease.

Summary: According to this study, triponderal mass index (TMI) is as effective as body mass index (BMI) in determining obesity and body adiposity. The study developed TMI reference values for Turkish children and adolescents and compared TMI with BMI in terms of body adiposity and obesity indices, finding similar predictive power for both measurements.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between weight stigma and weight status in children aged 6-18 years for the first time, revealing a positive bidirectional association that is moderated by age and gender. The findings underscore the importance of timely interventions to address obesity and weight stigma in order to protect children's well-being.

Summary: The study found that obesity in children aged 6-13 was associated with weight gain and height gain. Obese children had higher growth velocity than normal BMI groups between 6 and 9 years of age, but overweight and obese girls between 9 and 13 years had lower growth velocity than underweight girls.

Summary: This study aimed to validate the recently introduced metric %AWL for comparing outcomes after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB). The weight data of patients who had undergone LSG and LRYGB were analyzed, and %EWL, %TWL, and %AWL metrics were used for comparing their weight loss. The findings suggest that %AWL is the best metric for medium-term comparison after LRYGB, while an intermediary metric based on BMI 8 kg/m(2) provides the best fit for LSG.

Summary: Childhood obesity is a major public health concern in the United States, and early identification of obesity risk is crucial for prevention. Various methods, including regression analysis and machine learning-based classifications, have been developed to predict obesity in children. In this study, three machine learning approaches were proposed and applied to real data to predict childhood obesity at five years of age. The models achieved accuracy rates of 89%, 77%, and 89% for different scenarios, providing valuable decision support for healthcare professionals to reduce obesity-related complications and improve healthcare.

Summary: The exposome refers to factors an individual is exposed to across their life course and is constantly changing. This study aimed to translate spatial exposure to various factors with obesity prevalence to create actionable population-based constructs. Different factors were associated with obesity in areas of high and low prevalence, providing insights for further population or policy level studies.

Summary: A matrix is proposed to standardize the reporting of mental health diversion programs and provide a framework for program evaluation. The current challenge is that program reports may overlook important contextual factors, limiting generalizability and comparability. Using a standard matrix framework helps to clearly list the components of the program, context, and community systems, facilitating evaluation and the creation of sustainable programs.

Summary: This article provides a summary of the research articles in the special edition of The Journal of Contemporary Justice. The research findings demonstrate the breakdown of processes and services in diversion-based programs at the intersection of criminal justice and health care systems. The lack of a transdisciplinary understanding and scattered reporting on diversion hinder effective implementation.

Summary: There is a lack of normative theory for diverting justice-involved individuals with mental illness at the intersection of criminal justice and health care systems. This paper proposes a potential systems theory of diversion that explains the overlapping boundaries within and between these systems. The theoretical disconnect may fail to consider the impact of criminal justice diversion on the health care system. A unified systems theory of diversion is proposed to improve evaluation, comparability, sustainability, resource allocation, and outcomes of diversion programs.

Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), with its iatrogenic origins and power differentials, complicates stigma and barriers to treatment, emerging as a major theme in public health discourse.
