Summary: This study investigated the association between adherence to the Lebanese Mediterranean diet (LMD) and frailty among older adults in Lebanon. The results showed that higher adherence to the LMD was associated with lower prevalence of frailty, suggesting that dietary habits may have a positive impact on the health status of older adults.

Summary: The study found that higher consumption of red meat was associated with an increased risk of frailty in older women, even after adjusting for lifestyle factors, medication use, and dietary factors. Each additional serving of red meat per day was associated with a relative risk of 1.13 for total red meat, 1.08 for unprocessed red meat, and 1.26 for processed red meat.

Additionally, substituting plant protein for animal protein significantly reduced the risk of frailty.

Summary: Geriatric medicine focuses on the care of older people, especially those with frailty. Comprehensive geriatric assessment is a holistic form of care that can reduce adverse outcomes. The specialty has evolved from community-based services to acute care, posing a challenge in delivering optimal geriatric care across the entire hospital.

Summary: The study found a significant association between high adherence to the Mediterranean diet and physical performance and cognitive function in older adults. Longitudinal analysis revealed that high adherence to the Mediterranean diet reduced the risk of global cognitive decline in non-demented older adults, but no significant associations were found with mobility problems, MCI, and dementia.

Summary: Frailty is a geriatric syndrome with increasing frequency and dire consequences due to population aging. Nutritional factors, particularly the Mediterranean diet, play a crucial role in its pathogenesis. A systematic review and meta-analysis confirmed a robust association between higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet and reduced incident frailty. Promoting the Mediterranean diet as a high-quality dietary pattern adapted to different regions offers an opportunity to counteract the spread of unhealthy eating and lifestyle models and reduce frailty incidence.

Summary: Populations in Asian developed economies are rapidly ageing, resulting in increased frailty and dependency. Consideration of social determinants is crucial in designing equitable health and social care systems. Asian countries are developing integrated medical social care, with funding provided by long-term care insurance and philanthropy.

Summary: This study aims to determine the association between lifestyle factors (smoking, alcohol use, nutrition, physical activity) and multidimensional frailty. The results showed that higher alcohol consumption, physical activity, healthy nutrition, and less smoking were associated with lower levels of frailty. Physical activity had the greatest impact on frailty.

Summary: This study examined the association between cannabis use, fast-food consumption, overweight, and obesity among adolescents in 28 countries. The results showed a significant association between cannabis use and fast-food consumption, but no association with overweight and obesity. There was moderate heterogeneity among countries for obesity, and positive associations between cannabis use and obesity were observed in the Bahamas, Bangladesh, Namibia, and Nepal.

Summary: Antidepressants have varied effects on the regulation of the cardiac autonomic nervous system. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are associated with reduced heart rate variability, while tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) decrease parasympathetic function. Agomelatine may increase high frequency power. Further research is needed to understand the effects of SSRIs on cardiac ANS regulation after acute myocardial infarction and the effects of newer antidepressants.

Summary: Pain, especially severe pain, is significantly associated with an increased risk of incident sarcopenia in older adults. The presence of pain at baseline, regardless of the sites, is a potential risk factor for sarcopenia over a 10-year follow-up period in a representative sample of the English older adult population.

Summary: In order to identify potential novel medications for child and adolescent mental health problems, we conducted a systematic search on clinical trial databases from 2010 to 2022. We included phase 2 or 3 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of medications without regulatory approval in the US, Europe or Asia, and also RCTs of dietary interventions/probiotics. We found 234 ongoing or completed RCTs, with varying results on primary outcomes.

Summary: Interest in neurostimulation interventions has increased in recent decades, but a scientometric analysis of scientific knowledge and trends is lacking. A search using relevant keywords in the Web of Science Core Collection retrieved a total of 47,681 documents with 987,979 references. The study identified two prominent research trends: noninvasive and invasive brain stimulation, which have formed a cluster focused on evidence synthesis. Noteworthy emerging research trends include transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation, DBS/epilepsy in the pediatric population, spinal cord stimulation, and brain-machine interface. Further development can be fostered by enhancing communication between experts and encouraging translational research.

Summary: This cohort study suggests that substance use, especially substance-induced psychosis, is associated with an increased risk of developing a schizophrenia spectrum disorder. Substance use without psychosis, although having a lower relative risk of transition, results in a greater absolute number of transitions. Several factors, including cannabis use, younger age, and male sex, are associated with a higher risk of transition.

Summary: This study evaluates the clinical significance of iron deficiency (ID) screening and ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) treatment in acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) patients. The results show a high prevalence of ID in ADHF patients, but FCM treatment had no significant impact on correcting the deficiency. Achieving the target dose of FCM and pursuing outpatient treatment are necessary for long-term clinical benefits.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) face a higher risk of COVID-19 mortality. However, limited evidence is available regarding the risk post-vaccination. This study investigated COVID-19 mortality among individuals with schizophrenia and other SMIs before, during, and after the UK vaccine roll-out. The results revealed that people with SMI, particularly those with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, were at a greater risk of COVID-19 mortality compared to matched controls. Despite efforts to prioritize vaccination for individuals with SMI, disparities in COVID-19 mortality still persist.

Summary: This study aimed to identify predictors of key outcomes in mental disorders. Through an umbrella review, the researchers identified multivariable candidate predictors for response, remission, recovery, and relapse in various mental disorders. Several transdiagnostic predictors were found, but none were found for recovery. Factors such as disease-specific symptoms, gender, education level, quality of life, and functioning were identified as predictors for remission and relapse in different mental disorders.
