Summary: This study provides recent data on the prevalence of undernutrition in Dutch community-dwelling older adults. The results show that currently one out of fourteen community-dwelling adults aged 65 years and older is undernourished. Factors such as being female, older, living alone, receiving formal home care, and having poor self-rated health, poor appetite, or mobility limitations are associated with a higher prevalence. Increasing awareness for early recognition and treatment is crucial.

Summary: Both undernutrition and frailty have negative impacts on the health and functional outcomes of the older adult population. US national surveys currently only include limited health measures that can be used to identify undernutrition and frailty risk in older adults. Therefore, adding simple screening measures such as grip strength, unintentional weight loss, and loss of appetite to national surveys could improve risk assessment and help set national goals to reduce the prevalence of undernutrition and frailty.

Summary: The objective of this study was to identify the risk factors for malnutrition among under-five children in Pakistan. The study analyzed data from the Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey (PDHS 2017-18) using quantile regression analysis. The findings showed that malnutrition was more prevalent among boys and children of older mothers. Factors such as small body size at birth, maternal education level, household poverty, rural residence, and inadequate breastfeeding practices had a negative effect on different measures of malnutrition. On the other hand, older maternal age and higher birth order number had a positive effect on under-nutrition. Elderly and smoking mothers were identified as associated risk factors for both stunting and being underweight. Proper breastfeeding practices, better economic status, average or above-average birth weight, and milk consumption were found to be protective factors against malnutrition in Pakistan.

Summary: Malnutrition is a global health concern that affects patient outcomes, hospital stay duration, and healthcare costs. While there is extensive research on undernutrition in hospitalized patients, data on overnutrition is limited. This study examines the prevalence of both under and overnutrition in a hospitalized population and evaluates the dietetic care provided to obese patients using the Nutrition Care Process Model. The findings reveal a high prevalence of overweight and obese patients, lower malnutrition risk profiles in these patients, and a lack of nutrition diagnosis following the recommended model.

Summary: Undernutrition and inflammatory processes are predictors of early mortality in the elderly, and there is a need for rapid and accurate diagnosis. SIRT1 has shown potential as a marker for undernutrition, and this article summarizes the available studies on its association with undernutrition in older people. The literature suggests that low SIRT1 levels in the blood of older individuals may be linked to increased risk of severe undernutrition associated with inflammation and systemic metabolic changes, rather than physiological aging processes.

Summary: The 2022 Front-of-pack labels (FOPLs) aim to communicate the health value of food items to consumers and support public health policies. However, directive FOPLs like Nutri-Score have drawbacks such as overemphasizing selected nutritional factors, ignoring the food matrix and holistic aspects of nourishment, and allowing ultra-processed products. In contrast, informative FOPLs focus on individual portions and avoid classifying foods as healthy or unhealthy. The adoption of FOPLs has not been effectively linked to improvements in health outcomes.

Summary: Digital anthropometry (DA) has been developed for body composition evaluation and postural analysis. This review examines the current state of DA technology and evaluates the reliability and accuracy of available technologies on the market. DA shows high reliability and accuracy, especially in assessing obese patients and correlates well with conventional anthropometry and body composition estimates. DA is cost-effective and time-efficient, making it a useful screening tool before more expensive imaging techniques or as an alternative to other less affordable techniques. However, caution is needed in interpreting results due to the heterogeneity of available studies. Furthermore, there is a need for integrated technologies to analyze body composition according to multi-compartmental models.

Summary: Accumulating evidence suggests a connection between sarcopenic obesity and NAFLD, but the impact of NAFLD on muscle contractility remains uncertain. This study aimed to investigate the effect of NAFLD on dynapenia in patients with sarcopenic obesity. The results showed that despite no significant differences in body weight, glycometabolic parameters, and hepatic steatosis prevalence, patients with sarcopenic obesity had worse serum lipid profiles, higher body fat, and lower skeletal muscle mass. There was a positive correlation between disposition index and muscle quality index after controlling for menopause and body fat percentage.

Summary: The impact of inflammation on food intake is unclear, but it is a key risk factor for malnutrition. A study of geriatric hospitalized patients across Europe found that inflammation was the most prominent risk factor for low food intake and malnutrition, surpassing other factors such as age, gender, infection, and comorbidity. A CRP level of ≥3.0 mg/dL is associated with a high risk of malnutrition in hospitalized geriatric patients.

Summary: This review investigates the mechanisms through which metabolic flexibility and insulin resistance contribute to the progression of NAFLD and heart disease. Both play a critical role in glucose and lipid metabolism, and disruption of metabolic flexibility leads to abnormal lipid metabolism and fat accumulation in the liver, while insulin resistance affects cardiac glucose metabolism and lipid metabolism, leading to impaired cardiac function. Regular physical activity promotes metabolic flexibility, while weight loss achieved through calorie restriction improves insulin sensitivity.
