Summary: Ceria based solid solution doped with copper, manganese, and rare earth elements were synthesized and shown to have enhanced surface area and oxygen mobility. The catalytic activity in CO oxidation was higher in samples containing neodymium compared to samarium. These materials also showed potential as solid electrolytes for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells.

Summary: Phase change materials (PCMs) have the ability to store and release large amounts of energy during melting and crystallization processes, making them highly promising for temperature regulation and thermal energy storage applications. In this study, PCM microcapsules with melamine-formaldehyde resin (MF) shells were prepared using in situ polymerization of Pickering emulsions stabilized by cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) for addressing PCM leakage and enhancing thermal conduction. Paraffin wax (PW) was utilized as the PCM material. The resulting microcapsules exhibited high latent heat of crystallization and fusion, with the microcapsules with a core-shell ratio of 2 (Micro-2.0) showing the highest values. The encapsulation efficiency of Micro-2.0 was determined to be approximately 79.84%.

Summary: Samarium doped ceria thin films were successfully deposited on Si (100) substrates at 500 and 600 degrees C using Pulsed Laser Deposition. X-ray Diffraction confirmed the presence of Samarium Doped Cerium Oxide crystalline compound in the films. Atomic Force Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy revealed high quality films with low roughness, especially for the sample deposited at 600 degrees C. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy showed an increased proportion of Ce3+ in the deposited films compared to the target. Spectroscopic Ellipsometry analysis calculated a refractive index under 2.2 in the visible and near-infrared domain. Nanoindentation tribometric measurements indicated a decrease in elasticity modulus and hardness with increasing substrate temperature. These films show potential as electrolyte materials for new generation electrochemical devices.

Summary: Samarium doped calcium silicates were successfully synthesized using cost-effective natural resources like rice husk ash and egg shell powder, showing potential for synthesizing visible light emitting phosphors. The study indicates that agro-food wastes have the potential to be used as precursors for phosphors, while the method also offers environmental friendly and cost-effective benefits.

Summary: Rare earth doping affects the structural and magnetic properties of Ni-Co ferrite materials. The saturation magnetization of rare-earth doped ferrites is strongly dependent on the magnetic moment of the rare earth ion, while coercivity increases with the atomic number of the rare earth ion.

Summary: The integration of doped ceria into fuel electrode-supported solid oxide cells is a difficult task due to high sintering temperatures. The interdiffusion between the layers is undesirable. In this study, we investigated the influence of different dopants (X = Y, Gd or Sm) on the interdiffusion behavior between ceria (10XDC) and yttria-stabilized zirconia (8YSZ). Despite small differences in interdiffusion behavior, the different dopants did not lead to significant changes in the cell impedance. However, the presence of NiO in the fuel electrode resulted in enhanced interdiffusion kinetics and the formation of porosity at the electrolyte interface, which negatively affected the electrode performance.

Summary: New composite films were prepared by incorporating bacterial cellulose nanofibers and cerium oxide nanoparticles into chitosan matrices. The amount of nanofillers affected the structure and properties of the composites, including film stiffness and strength. Increasing the concentration of nanoceria improved the biocompatibility and adhesion of the films to mesenchymal stem cells. These nanocomposite films exhibit favorable properties for use as matrix materials in cell culture and wound dressings.

Summary: The addition of alkali carbonates plays a significant role in influencing superionic conduction in doped ceria-based nanocomposites via composite interfaces. X-ray diffraction confirms the structure of the composite, while TEM analysis shows the formation of an amorphous layer of carbonates on nanocrystalline doped ceria particles.

Summary: This study presents a bioinspired approach to enhance the stiffness and strength of biopolymer hydrogels and films through nanoscale architecture and templated microstructure. The results show that the nanopillar templating strategy improves the mechanical performance of chitosan hydrogels, surpassing the strength of unstructured hydrogels and exhibiting comparable performance to other stiff, strong hydrogels and natural tissues.
