Summary: This study investigated the incidence of diagnosed dementia and its association with age at diagnosis and survival afterward among the three largest ethnic groups in the UK. The findings showed that Black people had a higher incidence of dementia, while South Asian and Black people were diagnosed and died at a younger age compared to White individuals. Therefore, targeted prevention and care strategies should be prioritized and tailored to these ethnic groups.

Summary: There are significant racial and ethnic disparities in the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the United States, with black patients having worse overall survival and Hispanic and Asian patients having better overall survival compared with white patients. Interventions are needed to reduce disparities in early HCC detection and improve HCC prognosis.

Summary: This study investigated demographic and clinical risk factors for severe COVID-19 and readmission among young adults aged 18-29 in Houston, Texas. Findings indicated that factors such as age, gender, ethnicity, obesity, asthma history, and comorbidities like cardiovascular disease and diabetes were predictive of severe disease and readmission within 30 days. The study highlights the need for COVID-19 awareness and prevention in young adults, especially those in marginalized communities with underlying health conditions.

Summary: Racial/ethnic minority children have worse liver transplant outcomes, but the disparities can be partially explained by household and neighborhood socioeconomic factors, insurance, and disease severity at wait-list entry. A nuanced understanding of how social adversity contributes to wait-list outcomes may help improve transplant outcomes for children.

Summary: Atrial fibrillation (AF) affects at least 60 million individuals globally, with race and ethnicity playing a significant role in its epidemiology, risk prediction, treatment, and outcomes. Most studies have mainly included White populations, with underrepresentation of minority racial and ethnic groups, highlighting the need for more inclusive research to address inequities in treatment and outcomes. Studies must focus on gathering accurate race-based epidemiologic data and evaluating social determinants and genetic factors across multiple races and ethnicities to enhance AF risk prediction, prevention, and management.

Summary: The study found that racial disparities among cutaneous melanoma patients have worsened from before the year 2000 to 2010 or later. Patients with localized disease across all minority groups suffered increasing disparity, highlighting the need for improved postdiagnosis management for minorities to mitigate disparity and improve survival.

Summary: Academic medical centers are crucial in increasing access to and uptake of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. The Boston Medical Center implemented a vaccination program that focused on community-based sites, mobile vaccination events, and strong partnerships to ensure equitable distribution. Challenges included the need for a robust operational infrastructure and addressing community mistrust.

Summary: Among hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the United States, there are racial and ethnic disparities in mortality rates, with Black adults showing higher mortality rates due to a higher burden of comorbidities. In contrast, Hispanic patients exhibit lower mortality rates even after adjusting for various demographic and clinical factors.

Summary: The study found that racial/ethnic disparities exist in the management of primary hyperparathyroidism among older adults, with Black and Hispanic patients less likely to be evaluated by a surgeon and undergo parathyroidectomy compared to White patients. Urgent attention is needed to address the factors contributing to these disparities in order to achieve parity in the management of primary hyperparathyroidism.

Summary: Despite significant advances in the fields of coronary artery disease (CAD) and stroke, there are notable racial and ethnic disparities. In addition to traditional cardiovascular risk factors, disparities in care provision, social determinants of health, and racial discrimination within and outside of the health care system also contribute to these differences. Improved culturally congruent communication about risk factors and symptoms is needed to achieve better and more equitable outcomes in CAD and stroke.

Summary: The study explored the relationship between fathers' awareness and communication ease with fathers on adolescent bullying victimization and psychosomatic symptoms, finding that a higher level of fathers' awareness and ease of communication were associated with lower levels of bullying victimization. The results support the importance of relationship quality with fathers as a protective factor against bullying victimization.

Summary: This study examined cortisol levels in low-income children at risk for obesity over a span of 5 assessments from early to middle childhood. The results showed higher cortisol levels among Black children as early as 2-4 years old, compared to both non-Hispanic White children and non-Black Hispanic children. These differences were not explained by family income or neighborhood disadvantage. The study highlights the importance of understanding the multiple factors that contribute to elevated cortisol levels among Black children.
