Onchocerciasis in tropical neurology: A scoping review

Jaime Luna, Salvatore Metanmo, Farid Boumediene, Pascal Mbelesso, Emilie Auditeau, Daniel Ajzenberg, Pierre-Marie Preux

Summary: This study conducted a systematic scoping review to investigate the association between onchocerciasis and four neurological diseases in tropical countries. The results suggest a strong association between onchocerciasis and epilepsy, while further research is needed to explore the links with nodding syndrome, Nakalanga syndrome, and encephalitis.

Epidemiological and clinical study of microsporidiosis in French kidney transplant recipients from 2005 to 2019: TRANS-SPORE registry

Clement Dumond, Florence Aulagnon, Isabelle Etienne, Anne-Elisabeth Heng, Marie-Elisabeth Bougnoux, Loic Favennec, Nassim Kamar, Xavier Iriart, Bruno Pereira, Mathias Buchler, Guillaume Desoubeaux, Hannah Kaminski, Florian Lussac-Sorton, Gilles Gargala, Dany Anglicheau, Philippe Poirier, Anne Scemla, Cyril Garrouste

Summary: Microsporidiosis is an emerging opportunistic infection in renal transplantation recipients, predominantly manifesting as diarrhea and acute renal injury. Treatment involves reducing immunosuppression and administering drugs such as fumagillin, with a high overall clinical remission rate.

Microsporidiosis after liver transplantation: A French nationwide retrospective study

Summary: Microsporidiosis is a rare infection after liver transplantation that can lead to severe complications like dehydration and renal failure. Treatment includes changes in immunosuppressive therapy and specific therapy against microsporidiosis. It is important to systematically screen for microsporidiosis in cases of persistent diarrhea after ruling out common infectious causes.

Salvatore Metanmo, Farid Boumediene, Pierre-Marie Preux, Robert Colebunders, Joseph N. Siewe Fodjo, Eric de Smet, Emmanuel Yangatimbi, Andrea S. Winkler, Pascal Mbelesso, Daniel Ajzenberg

Summary: Nodding Syndrome (NS) is a severe form of epilepsy affecting children in Africa, particularly in Tanzania, South Sudan, and Uganda. It leads to serious complications and impairs the future of affected children and the present of adults in charge of them. New cases of NS have been identified in the Central African Republic (CAR), highlighting the need for further research and public awareness.

Contribution of the anaerobic blood culture vial for the recovery of Candida glabrata: A retrospective multicentric study

Summary: Although Candida spp are aerobic microorganisms, Candida glabrata can grow anaerobically. The time-to-positivity of C. glabrata is shorter in anaerobic blood culture vials compared to aerobic vials. Up to 15 (37.5%) cases of C. glabrata bloodstream infections were only positive in anaerobic vials.

Non-traumatic coma in young children in Benin: are viral and bacterial infections gaining ground on cerebral malaria?

Josselin Brisset, Karl Angendu Baki, Laurence Watier, Elisee Kinkpe, Justine Bailly, Linda Ayedadjou, Maroufou Jules Alao, Ida Dossou-Dagba, Gwladys Bertin, Michel Cot, Farid Boumediene, Daniel Ajzenberg, Agnes Aubouy, Sandrine Houze, Jean-Francois Faucher

Summary: This study aimed to describe the etiology, management, and early outcomes of non-traumatic comas in young children in Benin, and to identify factors associated with death. The study found that infections were the cause of all deaths, with cerebral malaria being the most common cause of non-traumatic coma. Missed opportunities for early effective antimalarial treatment were common.

Kinetics of monocyte subpopulations during experimental cerebral malaria and its resolution in a model of late chloroquine treatment

Jade Royo, Aissata Camara, Benedicte Bertrand, Philippe Batigne, Agnes Coste, Bernard Pipy, Agnes Aubouy

Summary: Monocytes accumulate in the brain microvasculature during cerebral malaria (CM) and exhibit different behaviors during infection and resolution. Increasing the expressions of specific proteins in the brain contributes to the resolution of neuroinflammation.

Evaluation of the Bio-Evolution Microsporidia generic and typing real-time PCR assays for the diagnosis of intestinal microsporidiosis

Summary: Cases of intestinal microsporidiosis infection are underestimated. Real-time PCR is a useful tool for diagnosing the disease with high sensitivity and specificity. However, some types of infections cannot be detected by the microsporidia typing PCR assay. These findings provide valuable insights for the diagnosis of intestinal microsporidiosis.
