Non-Antimicrobial Adjuvant Strategies to Tackle Biofilm-Related Staphylococcus aureus Prosthetic Joint Infections

Narayan Pant, Damon P. Eisen

Summary: Staphylococcus aureus biofilms play a significant role in chronic infections by protecting bacteria from antimicrobials and the immune system. The complexity of biofilm biology, particularly in S. aureus, highlights the need for novel treatment approaches targeting vulnerable genetic and biochemical processes. Successful treatment strategies in animal models provide potential insights for the prevention and eradication of biofilm-related S. aureus infections.

Effect of Savirin or Ticagrelor Treatment on the Expression of Commonly Used Reference Genes in Staphylococcus aureus

Narayan Pant, Catherine Rush, Jeffrey Warner, Damon P. P. Eisen

Summary: This study aimed to identify the most stably expressed reference genes in Staphylococcus aureus to study gene expression in biofilm-related infections. Four different algorithms were used to determine the optimal reference genes for savirin and ticagrelor treatment experiments. Based on consensus ranking, spa and rpoD were the most appropriate reference genes for savirin treatment, while gapdH and gyrA were most appropriate for ticagrelor treatment. It is recommended to re-validate reference genes before use.
