Vertical Bone Augmentation with Simultaneous Dental Implantation Using Crestal Biomaterial Rings: A Rabbit Animal Study

Background: Ceramic biomaterial blocks like hydroxyl apatite are too brittle for simple simultaneous vertical augmentation and dental implant placement. Biological scaffolds of xenogenic or allogenic origin are known to be advantageous. Purpose: The aim of this study was the proof of principle for combined vertical bone augmentation and dental implantation with marginal cuffs made of biological scaffolds with interconnecting porous system and titanium dental implants. Materials and Methods: Cylindrical porcine biomaterial rings (processed, mineralized bone matrix) were placed in combination with titanium dental implants in the tibia model using six chinchilla bastard rabbits (n = 12 samples). Histological examination included undecalcified histological examination with toluidine blue staining and fluorescence microscopy. Animals were sacrificed after 30 days. Results: The results showed bony healing in the scaffolds with immature bone tissue ingrowth following the trabecular structure, showing lamellar cancellous bone healing. Fluorescence microscope showed analogous results. Conclusion: The biological scaffold proved a biocompatibility in a xenogenic setting. The vertical bone augmentation with simultaneous implantation was successful and proved the feasibility of the concept.

Summary: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that leads to tooth loss and significantly impacts global health. A hyaluronic acid-based dispersion with controlled oxygen delivery shows potential as a treatment for periodontitis. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate the biocompatibility, antimicrobial activity against Porphyromonas gingivalis, and angiogenesis enhancement of the developed oxygen-releasing dispersion. This suggests the potential of oxygen-releasing biomaterials for periodontal tissue regeneration.

Bone Sialoprotein Immobilized in Collagen Type I Enhances Angiogenesis In Vitro and In Ovo

Summary: Bone fracture healing is a complex process involving early immune reactions, bone formation, and angiogenesis. This study focuses on the effects of bone sialoprotein (BSP) immobilized in a collagen type I gel on angiogenesis. In vitro analyses and a yolk sac membrane assay demonstrate that BSP induces angiogenesis and that collagen type I is the optimal carrier for BSP. This suggests that BSP could be a promising molecule for bone tissue regeneration.

Summary: This is the first prospective study using a multicentric approach to investigate the effectiveness of adjuvant radiotherapy in patients with early squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx. The study found that adjuvant radiotherapy does not seem to influence overall survival, but it positively affects time to progression. However, irradiated patients report a significantly decreased quality of life up to three years after therapy.

Summary: Oral cancer is a life-threatening disease and specific protein biomarkers in the blood can help with early tumor detection and individualized therapy. This exploratory study used advanced technology to analyze serum proteome and identified novel biomarkers for oral cancer. The study showed significant differences in serum protein levels between oral cancer patients and controls, as well as before and after curative surgery.

Evaluation of surgical techniques in survival rate and complications of zygomatic implants for the rehabilitation of the atrophic edentulous maxilla: a systematic review

Summary: This study assessed the outcome and complications of zygomatic implant placement using the original surgical technique (OST) and an Anatomy-Guided approach (AGA) in patients with severely atrophic maxillae. Based on the systematic review, placing ZI with OST and AGA is associated with a high implant survival rate and a higher risk of surgical complications, including sinusitis and soft tissue infection around the implant, during a minimum of 6 months follow-up.

Bisphosphonate-treatment of secondary chronic osteomyelitis of the jaw - a case report

Summary: Secondary chronic osteomyelitis (SCO) is a progressive jawbone destruction caused by bacterial infection. Antibiotics are the first-line treatment, but surgery may not provide a cure. Bisphosphonates have shown promising results in SCO patients, similar to their success in primary nonbacterial osteomyelitis.

Comparison of morbidity-related parameters between autologous and allogeneic bone grafts for alveolar ridge augmentation from patients' perspective-A questionnaire-based cohort study

Summary: This study analyzed and compared morbidity-related parameters after alveolar ridge augmentation using autogenous and allogeneic bone blocks from patients' perspective. The results showed that the rate of nerve irritations was twice as high in the autologous group, and swelling was significantly higher in patients with autologous bone blocks. However, the overall satisfaction of patients in both groups was very high, with over 8/10 points.

The Accuracy of Zygomatic Implant Placement Assisted by Dynamic Computer-Aided Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of different approaches for zygomatic implant (ZI) placement in patients with severe maxillary problems. The results showed that dynamic computer-aided surgery (d-CAIS) and modified static computer-aided surgery (s-CAIS) had clinically acceptable outcomes, while the conventional s-CAIS had the highest deviation values. Surgeons should be aware of potential deviations and complications regardless of the selected approach.

In Vitro Evaluation of the Cytotoxic Potential of Thiosemicarbazide Coordinating Compounds in Hepatocyte Cell Culture

Summary: Cancer is a global medical problem, with a shortage of specific anticancer drugs and significant side effects. The liver plays a crucial role in drug metabolism and is a major target of anticancer compounds. Thus, it is important to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of potential anticancer substances on liver cells. This study showed that new local thiosemicarbazide coordination compounds (CCT) had a selective effect on hepatocytes in vitro and were less hepatotoxic compared to doxorubicin, indicating their potential in the development of new anticancer drugs.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the skills of dental students in choosing the correct stage, diagnostics, and treatment option for MRONJ based on clinical and radiographic imaging. The results showed a lack of knowledge among students in staging, diagnostics, and treatment of MRONJ, although CBCT imaging positively affected decision-making. Further teaching in this disease's context and X-ray diagnostics is needed.

Allogeneic versus autogenous shell technique augmentation procedures: a prospective-observational clinical trial comparing surgical time and complication rates
