Summary: Although insulin sensitivity was unaffected in old mice, glucose tolerance appeared to increase during the intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test, accompanied by higher plasma insulin levels. The reduced insulin clearance in old mice may be related to the decreased hepatic CEACAM1 and IDE function.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the effects of severe, short-term sleep restriction on gut microbiota composition and intestinal permeability in healthy adults. The findings indicated that severe, short-term sleep restriction reduced the richness of the gut microbiota but had minimal impact on community composition and did not affect intestinal permeability in healthy young men.

Summary: In male hypogonadism patients, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) improves glucose utilization, branched amino acid and carnosine metabolism, but does not activate fatty acid oxidation. Lipid metabolism shows delayed improvement, and both malate and glycerol shuttle are reduced, leading to lower NADH and ATP levels, with increased lactate production.

Summary: The study aimed to examine the association between sleep quality and benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) among middle-aged and older men in India. The results showed that worse sleep quality was significantly associated with a higher incidence of BPH among middle-aged and older Indian men. Further prospective studies are needed to clarify this association and explore potential mechanisms.

Summary: Among men with obesity and low testosterone concentrations, the combination of metformin plus testosterone, metformin only, and testosterone only, compared to placebo, reduced insulin resistance with no evidence of additive benefit.

Summary: This study explores the hormonal correlates of paternal sensitivity and finds no significant associations between sensitivity and basal hormone levels or reactivity. However, it reveals an interaction between cortisol and testosterone in their effects on paternal sensitive parenting.

Summary: Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) may protect against the insulin resistance caused by saturated fatty acids (SFA). This study found that an oral fat pre-load, especially fish oil, affected the early postprandial uptake of branched chain amino acids (BCAA) in response to protein and glucose, but did not significantly impact insulin sensitivity.

Summary: Serum levels of 11-oxygenated androgens are higher in women with PCOS than in controls. However, these hormones show a poor performance in recognizing women with hyperandrogenism, as currently defined. The relationships of these androgens with insulin sensitivity strongly differ from that of FT, suggesting a different role of classic and 11-oxygenated androgens in the pathophysiology of PCOS.

Summary: This study found significant changes in cognitive assessment, depressive symptoms, and sleep quality in men with prostate cancer undergoing ADT after one year of treatment. However, there was no statistically significant relationship between cognitive performance and impaired sleep or depression results.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of acute total sleep deprivation on blood concentrations of leptin, ghrelin, and adiponectin. The results show that sleep deprivation reduces levels of leptin while increasing levels of ghrelin and adiponectin. These changes are more pronounced in women and among individuals with obesity.

Summary: Considerable research has shown that low levels of testosterone are associated with increased risk for depression. However, the effectiveness of testosterone replacement therapy in treating depression in men with low testosterone levels remains uncertain and requires further investigation. Important factors to consider include the heterogeneity of major depressive disorder and the potential role of polygenic mechanisms in influencing the interaction between testosterone and depression.

Summary: A low-calorie saccharide preload significantly reduces subsequent food intake and overall calorie consumption, indicating it could be a promising support for reducing caloric intake. This study suggests a potential strategy for weight loss by triggering feelings of satiety through oral ingestion of carbohydrates.
