Summary: This study examined the eligibility for blood pressure and lipid treatment in patients with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) according to the recommendations of the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). Different risk classifiers were used to calculate predicted cardiovascular risk, and actual cardiovascular risk was determined based on ESC guidelines. The results showed that multimodal risk assessment, including disease-related and cardiometabolic features, can improve cardiovascular risk management in APS.

Summary: Although there was initially significant heterogeneity in the preliminary voting on terminology, diagnostics, and treatment for condylar dislocation, a strong consensus was ultimately achieved in the final voting. Multiple alterations led to the development of 24 final recommendations for the assessment and management of TMJ dislocation. These recommendations, based on both evidence and consensus, represent the first international guidelines in the field of TMJ surgery and should serve as the basis for clinical practice guidelines.

Summary: This position statement provides guidance to cardiologists and related specialists on the management of adult patients with elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)]. Elevated Lp(a) is an independent and causal risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD). Selective screening strategies of high-risk patients are recommended, but universal screening of the population is currently not advised. Testing for elevated Lp(a) is recommended in all patients with premature ASCVD and those considered to be at intermediate-to-high risk of ASCVD. Apheresis should be considered in patients with progressive ASCVD. New ribonucleic acid (RNA)-based therapies which directly lower Lp(a) are undergoing clinical trials.

Summary: This study found that coronary patients with prior depression were less likely to have their lipids monitored and achieve guideline targets within 1 year. Females with depression were particularly at risk, as they were the least likely to be tested and achieve lipid targets. Improving care for these patients could greatly reduce their risk of future events.

Summary: Syzigium cumini leaf extract (ScExt) has shown to protect macrophages from oxLDL-mediated toxicity by preventing overproduction of reactive oxygen/nitrogen species and foam cell formation induced by oxLDL. These protective effects make ScExt a promising antioxidant for future trials in atherosclerosis prevention.

Summary: Genome sequencing in healthcare may lead to opportunistic genomic screening; the European Society of Human Genetics recommends a cautious approach, emphasizing ethical norms and balancing potential benefits against healthcare expenditures; for pediatric genome sequencing, counseling and informed consent should be offered to ensure ethical standards are met.

Summary: This study examined the eligibility for lipid-lowering therapy (LLT) in SLE patients according to SCORE, with the addition of vascular ultrasound and disease-related features. The results showed that disease-related and ultrasound features can help improve LLT decision making in SLE.

Summary: The guidelines for the management of high blood pressure/hypertension by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association and the European Society of Cardiology/European Society of Hypertension are influential and show substantial concordance in their recommendations. The most notable difference is the blood pressure cut points recommended for diagnosis. Further harmonization of future guidelines could lead to improved prevention, awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension worldwide.

Summary: This study found that Lp(a) is only associated with ASCVD risk when hsCRP is elevated concurrently. Individuals with elevated levels of both Lp(a) and systemic inflammation have greater ASCVD risk and all-cause mortality.

Summary: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally, with women experiencing the fastest relative increase in middle-aged mortality. In addition to missed or delayed diagnosis and undertreatment, sex-specific factors contribute to increased cardiovascular risk in women. The European Atherosclerosis Society's position statement focuses on the impact of gender-specific factors and the effects of these factors on women's lifelong lipid profiles, including lipoprotein(a). Sociocultural components further compound these effects. Early identification and treatment of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors in women, especially those related to sex-specific conditions, are necessary to reduce the high burden of cardiovascular disease in women.

Summary: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally, with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) being the main contributor. ASCVD mortality is currently increasing, especially in middle-aged women. Sex-specific factors, such as hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, premature menopause, and polycystic ovary syndrome, are associated with higher cardiovascular risk.

Summary: Nanoparticle-based therapeutics show potential for treating atherosclerosis, but the complex plaque microenvironment hinders their targeting ability. In this study, we developed reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive and size-reducible nanoassemblies to overcome this barrier. These nanoassemblies specifically accumulated in atherosclerotic plaque, rapidly disassembled in response to excess ROS, and released smaller nanoparticles for deeper penetration and targeted drug delivery. In vivo studies demonstrated that the nanoassemblies reduced plaque size, lipid deposition, macrophage content, and local inflammatory factor levels, while also alleviating systemic inflammation. Overall, the ROS-responsive and size-reducible nanoassemblies exhibit enhanced targeting ability and provide an effective approach for atherosclerosis therapy.

Summary: Clinical audit is an important quality improvement activity that benefits patients in terms of enhanced care and safety. However, there is a variability in the implementation of clinical audit across Europe and a lack of awareness of the requirements. The QuADRANT project aims to address these issues by providing an overview of the current status of clinical audit in Europe and identifying barriers and challenges.
