Biomarkers: Promising and valuable tools towards diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of Covid-19 and other diseases

Summary: The use of biomarkers as early warning systems in disease risk evaluation has greatly increased in the last decade. Biomarkers are indicators of typical biological processes, pathogenic processes, or pharmacological reactions to therapy. The application and identification of biomarkers in the medical and clinical fields have had a tremendous impact on society. This review discusses the history, definitions, classifications, characteristics, and discovery of biomarkers, as well as their potential application in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of various diseases over the last decade. It aims to inspire readers to explore new avenues in biomarker research and development.

Comparison of Interleukin-6 with Other Markers in Diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer

Inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein, procalcitonin, and interleukin-6 may have potential prognostic roles in diagnosing ovarian cancer.

However, atypical variants of dermatofibroma can be challenging to diagnose accurately, and it is important to be aware of specific characteristics to differentiate them from malignant conditions.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of BAT with CD63 and CD203c as activation markers for diagnosing immediate reactions to amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid. The results showed that CD203c had higher sensitivity and specificity in amoxicillin allergic patients. Using BAT as a first step in the diagnostic procedure can reduce the need for a complete allergological work-up in a significant percentage of patients, reducing the risk of reinducing allergic reactions.

Summary: Abnormal levels of ALT and AST in human serum are sensitive indicators of liver damage. Current methods for their detection are complex and unsuitable for point-of-care applications. Lateral flow assay-based biosensors offer a rapid, accurate, and affordable alternative, but antibody-based LFAs have limitations for field use. This study proposes the use of aptamers to develop a low-cost LFA device for the early detection and diagnosis of liver disease.

This study focused on assessing pentraxin-3 as a biomarker for infected DFUs (IDFUs) and evaluating other markers such as white blood cells, C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and procalcitonin for identifying IDFUs.

Summary: Through analyzing microarray datasets of human blood samples exposed to different types of radiation, 33 multi-type ray co-induced genes were identified, mainly enriched in DNA damage, cellular apoptosis, and p53 signaling pathway. 12 radiation-specific genes independent of trauma and burns were further screened. DDB2 gene performed the best in the diagnosis of all types of ray radiation, while MDM2 gene was the best indicator for assessing radiation dose.

Single-Step Full-Face Surgical Treatment of the Facial Profile

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the feasibility, affordability, and simplicity of a single-stage full-face surgical profileplasty approach for improving facial profiling and achieving complete profile correction. A total of 113 patients underwent surgery to enhance their facial profiles, using a combination of five procedures. Evaluation of the treatment outcomes and possible side effects was conducted at different time points, with results indicating successful profile correction. The single-stage full-face surgical profile treatment not only corrects global facial deformities in different areas, but also provides overall enhancement in facial aesthetics and harmony, while reducing the need for multiple surgical procedures and associated risks.

Summary: This article demonstrates the use of autologous crushed cartilage grafts in rhinoplasty to achieve rapid recovery and optimal nasal functionality without tissue damage, allowing rapid rejuvenation. Microscopy imaging and analysis showed complete viability of chondrocytes, formation of new collagen fibers, neo-perichondrium, neo-angiogenesis, and optimal aesthetic outcome. This surgical approach is easy to perform, feasible, and time-efficient, with excellent tissue rejuvenation and rapid recovery.
