Intake of dietary flavonoids and incidence of ischemic heart disease in the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health cohort

Benjamin H. Parmenter, Frederik Dalgaard, Kevin Murray, Guillaume Marquis-Gravel, Aedin Cassidy, Catherine P. Bondonno, Joshua R. Lewis, Kevin D. Croft, Cecilie Kyro, Gunnar Gislason, Augustin Scalbert, Anne Tjonneland, Kim Overvad, Jonathan M. Hodgson, Nicola P. Bondonno

Summary: This study found no overall association between habitual dietary flavonoid intake and the risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD). However, stratified analysis by sex and smoking status showed that higher intakes of specific subclasses of flavonoids were associated with a lower risk of IHD among ever-smokers, but not among never-smokers or either sex specifically.

Schulze, Valeria Pala, Carlotta Sacerdote, Rosario Tumino, Bas Bueno-de-Mesquita, Maria-Jose Sanchez, Jose M. Huerta, Aurelio Barricarte, Pilar Amiano, Antonio Agudo, Anders Bjartell, Tanja Stocks, Elin Thysell, Maria Wennberg, Elisabete Weiderpass, Ruth C. Travis, Timothy J. Key, Aurora Perez-Cornago

Summary: This study investigated the associations between dietary protein intake and prostate cancer risk and mortality. The results suggest that dairy protein and yogurt protein are positively associated with prostate cancer risk, while egg protein may be positively associated with prostate cancer mortality. However, considering the weak associations and many tests conducted, these results should be interpreted with caution.

May, Nita G. Forouhi, Alicia K. Heath, Heinz Freisling, Elisabete Weiderpass, Augustin Scalbert, Raul Zamora-Ros

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the associations between the intake of total polyphenols, polyphenol classes, and subclasses and body weight change over 5 years. The results showed an inverse association between total flavonoid intake and body weight change, and positive associations between total polyphenol and hydroxycinnamic acid intake and body weight gain. However, the positive association between hydroxycinnamic acid intake and body weight gain was only found in coffee consumers, not in coffee nonconsumers.

Summary: This study analyzed data from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition cohort to examine the modifiable risk factors for small intestinal cancer (SIC). The results showed a positive association between smoking and SIC, while vegetable intake and total fat intake were inversely associated with SIC. However, factors such as physical activity, alcohol intake, red or processed meat, dairy products, and fiber intake were not associated with SIC.

Relative Validity and Reproducibility of a Web-Based Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire in the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health-Next Generations MAX Study

Summary: The food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) is a commonly used method in nutritional epidemiology to assess an individual's habitual dietary intake. This study evaluated the validity and reproducibility of the FFQ used in the DCH-NG cohort. Results showed that the FFQ provided satisfactory rankings of energy, nutrient, and food group intakes, making it suitable for epidemiological studies investigating diet and disease outcomes.

Butterworth, Elio Riboli, Karen J. Murphy, Nicholas J. Wareham, Nita G. Forouhi

Summary: A study found that adherence to the Mediterranean diet lowered the risk of type 2 diabetes, and objectively assessed adherence had a stronger association than self-reported adherence. The study used biomarkers to assess the actual effectiveness of the Mediterranean diet and found that higher adherence was associated with lower incidence of type 2 diabetes. This research is of importance in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes and reducing the burden on the population.

Risk of epithelial ovarian tumors among women with polycystic ovary syndrome: A nationwide population-based cohort study

Clarissa L. B. Frandsen, Pernille F. Svendsen, Bugge Nohr, Jakob H. Viuff, Thomas Maltesen, Susanne K. Kjaer, Allan Jensen

Summary: There is a potential association between polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and epithelial ovarian tumors due to shared risk factors. However, previous studies have shown conflicting results and methodological limitations. A population-based cohort study in Denmark was conducted to investigate this association. While there was no overall association, postmenopausal women with PCOS had an increased risk of ovarian cancer and women with PCOS had an increased risk of serous borderline ovarian tumors compared to those without PCOS. Larger studies with longer follow-up are needed to confirm these findings.
