Background: Growing evidence suggests a link between body composition and serum osteocalcin. Here we examined such an association between serum osteocalcin and body composition in Korean obese men. Methods: Eighty-six men, aged 20 to 76 years, who visited the obesity clinic at the Division of Family Medicine, Severance hospital, Seoul, Korea were recruited for this study. Abdominal fat computed tomography (CT) scans were performed to measure the visceral fat area (VFA) and subcutaneous fat area (SFA). Results: Serum osteocalcin levels were negatively correlated with age, VFA, and vFA/SFA ratio. In addition, serum osteocalcin levels were significantly decreased in obese and overweight subjects with visceral obesity (12.7 +/- 3.2) compared to those without visceral obesity (18.6 +/- 4.9). Multiple regression analysis showed that serum osteocalcin levels were associated with VFA in obese and overweight men after adjustment for age, insulin resistance, current smoking, alcohol consumption and adiposity indices. Conclusion: Osteocalcin was inversely related to visceral obesity in Korean obese and overweight men. These results suggest cross-talk between bone and adipose tissue. (C) 2010 Elsevier By. The Association Between Total Protein Intake and All-Cause Mortality in Middle Aged and Older Korean Adults With Chronic Kidney Disease

Yu-Jin Kwon, Hye Sun Lee, Go Eun Park, Hyung-Mi Kim, Jung Joo Lee, Woo Jeong Kim, Ji-Won Lee

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between total protein intake and all-cause mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The results showed that higher protein intake was not significantly associated with mortality in CKD patients. Further research is needed to determine optimal protein intake levels and the impact of dietary protein sources on health outcomes and mortality in CKD.

Effects of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms and Mediterranean Diet in Overweight or Obese Postmenopausal Women With Breast Cancer Receiving Adjuvant Hormone Therapy: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

Summary: This pilot randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of two obesity-related gene variants and a Mediterranean diet intervention on weight loss and metabolic parameters in overweight or obese breast cancer patients. The results showed that the gene variants did not influence weight loss or metabolic improvements within the Mediterranean diet intervention. However, in the control group, one of the gene variants was associated with increased intake of saturated fatty acids and trans fat. The study suggests that the Mediterranean diet may have a protective role against the effects of certain gene variants.

Summary: The cardiovascular system and the central nervous system exhibit a coordinated developmental process during embryonic development. Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common congenital disorder, and neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) are common complications in CHD patients. Both genetic and non-genetic factors contribute to the co-occurrence of CHD and NDD. Further research should focus on identifying common molecular mechanisms underlying this co-occurrence and promoting the research and treatment of developmental disorders related to the cardiovascular and central nervous systems.
