Background Hormones may have an impact on the incidence and course of dry-eye syndrome, and also nasal obstruction, especially in postmenopausal women. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of drospirenone 2 mg + estradiol 1 mg (Angeliq (R), Bayer AG, Berlin, Germany) on ocular functions and nasal airflow in postmenopausal women. Methods Thirty-four postmenopausal women were recruited for the study. A questionnaire on ocular surface disease index (OSDI) was administered; after routine ophthalmologic examination, tear film break-up time (TBUT) and Schirmer tests were performed. Intraocular pressure was measured with a Goldmann applanation tonometer. Nasal airflow resistance values were measured using rhinomanometry. Participants were submitted to oral daily treatment with drospirenone 2 mg + estradiol 1 mg. The duration of the study was 6 months and the participants were studied in the basal condition and after 6 months of therapy. Results The OSDI score and intraocular pressure were significantly higher before treatment than after treatment (p < 0.001); however, the results of the TBUT and Schimer test were significantly lower (p < 0.05). Rhinomanometric values were better during drospirenone 2 mg vertical bar estradiol 1 mg therapy than those observed at baseline (p < 0.001). Conclusions Oral daily treatment with drospirenone 2 mg + estradiol 1 mg reduces the risks for ocular diseases and nasal obstruction in postmenopausal women.

3D high frequency endovaginal ultrasound evaluation of urethral and pelvic morphology in stress urinary incontinence in first pregnancy

Hakan Peker, Berna Haliloglu Peker

Summary: The study compared the morphological characteristics of pelvis and urethra in nulliparous pregnant women with and without stress urinary incontinence (SUI) using 3D high-frequency endovaginal ultrasound (3D-EVUS). Women with SUI were found to have longer levator hiatus transverse diameter, shorter anteroposterior diameter, and wider symphysis angle compared to those without SUI. Additionally, a rhabdosphincter volume of less than 1.26 cm(3) was found to be a sensitive and specific predictor of SUI in nulliparous pregnant women.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the relationships between women's sexual functions, sexual quality of life, and depression in the pregnancy and postpartum periods. The results showed high rates of sexual dysfunction among participants during these periods, with a decrease in sexual quality of life as pregnancy progressed but a significant increase in the postpartum period. Depression symptoms were found to be associated with increased sexual dysfunction and decreased sexual quality of life in both pregnancy and postpartum periods, with an improvement in sexual quality of life as depressive symptoms decreased, especially in the sixth month postpartum.
