Summary: This study analyzed the outcomes of subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (S-ICDs) in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). Among 4,924 patients who received an S-ICD implant, 101 had CHD. The study found that S-ICDs are effective and safe in patients with CHD.

Summary: This study aimed to compare outcomes of epicardial versus transvenous implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) in children. The results showed that epicardial ICDs had more early and late complications compared to transvenous ICDs, but the association between ICD lead dysfunction and reintervention was no longer significant after controlling for confounding factors such as age and weight. Additionally, pleural coils were associated with better outcomes than epicardial coils in this population.

Summary: This study investigated the association between maternal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and fetal congenital heart defects (CHDs) in China. The results showed that higher maternal PM2.5 exposure, especially during the preconception period, increased the risk of certain types of CHDs in offspring. The findings highlight the importance of improving air quality in China and other highly polluted regions for CHD prevention.

Summary: This study aimed to collect clinical outcome data and identify risk factors for a complicated course of COVID-19 in patients with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD). Risk factors such as age, obesity, and multiple comorbidities were associated with an increased risk of a complicated COVID-19 course in ACHD patients. Cyanotic heart disease, including unrepaired cyanotic defects or Eisenmenger syndrome, were identified as particularly high-risk congenital cardiac defects in ACHD patients.

Summary: Limited contemporary data exist regarding outcomes and resource use among adults with congenital heart disease and heart failure. This study compared outcomes and resource use between adults with congenital heart disease and heart failure (ACHD-HF) and non-ACHD with heart failure (HF-non-ACHD). The study found that ACHD-HF patients have increased emergency department and hospital resource use over the past 10 years, but are less likely to receive advanced heart failure therapies such as ventricular assist device (VAD) or transplant compared with non-ACHD heart failure patients.

Summary: Between 1980 and 1997, 8 out of 10 individuals with congenital heart defects (CHDs) in the US survived until 35 years of age, with survival rates varying based on the severity of CHDs, presence of noncardiac anomalies, birth weight, and maternal race and ethnicity. Among individuals without noncardiac anomalies, those with nonsevere CHDs had similar mortality rates between 1 and 35 years of age as the general population, and those with any CHD had similar mortality rates between 10 and 35 years of age as the general population.

Summary: This study investigated whether fetal brain volume could predict neurodevelopmental outcomes in children with congenital heart disease (CHD). The results showed that fetal brain volume was correlated with cognitive, language, motor scores, and adaptive functioning scores. Fetal brain volume was found to be a strong independent predictor of neurodevelopmental outcomes, suggesting its potential as an important imaging biomarker for future risk assessment in CHD.
