Summary: This study presented characteristics of 1022 FMD patients from 22 countries and identified independent predictors of widespread disease, aneurysms, and dissections, including age at diagnosis, gender, family history, etc. The findings pave the way for targeted screening, management, and follow-up of FMD.

Risk Scores and Prediction Models in Chronic Heart Failure: A Comprehensive Review

Maria Toumpourleka, Dimitrios Patoulias, Alexandra Katsimardou, Michael Doumas, Christodoulos Papadopoulos

Summary: This study systematically reviewed recent literature on risk scores or prediction models for ambulatory patients with chronic heart failure. The majority of studies focused on heart failure patients with reduced ejection fraction, with only a few developed for those with preserved ejection fraction. Ischemic heart disease was the most common cause of heart failure in the reviewed studies, and more than half of the prediction scores have not been externally validated. Future development of prediction scores should consider patients with preserved or mid-range ejection fraction and incorporate advancements in pharmacotherapy.

Inflammatory Markers in Cardiovascular Disease; Lessons Learned and Future Perspectives

Dimitrios Patoulias, Konstantinos Stavropoulos, Konstantinos Imprialos, Vasilios Athyros, Haris Grassos, Michael Doumas, Charles Faselis

Summary: Inflammation plays a crucial role in atherosclerosis and atherothrombosis, closely linked to cardiovascular disease. Established and newer inflammatory markers have shown promise in both diagnosis and prognosis of CVD, with potential therapeutic implications. Further studies are needed to validate these markers for integration into clinical practice.

Exercise blood pressure, cardiorespiratory fitness and mortality risk

Peter Kokkinos, Charles Faselis, Labros Sidossis, Jiajia Zhang, Immanuel Babu Henry Samuel, Ali Ahmed, Pamela Karasik, Andreas Pittaras, Michael Doumas, Charalabos Grassos, Shirit Rosenberg, Jonathan Myers

Summary: This study assessed the impact of cardiorespiratory fitness on the association between exercise blood pressure and mortality risk, finding that individuals with low cardiorespiratory fitness had significantly higher mortality risk when SBP-Reserve <_52 mmHg. The risk of mortality was even higher in individuals who were unable to increase their exercise SBP above resting levels.

Summary: The study found that opportunistic screening and random sampling methods have similar reliability in estimating the prevalence of hypertension, but opportunistic screening underestimates undiagnosed hypertension and overestimates hypertension treatment and control rates.

Meta-analysis evaluating the risk of respiratory tract infections and acute respiratory distress syndrome with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists in cardiovascular outcome trials: Useful implications for the COVID-19 pandemic

D. Patoulias, A. Boulmpou, K. Imprialos, K. Stavropoulos, C. Papadopoulos, M. Doumas

Summary: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus are at higher risk for severe COVID-19 and related mortality. GLP-1 receptor agonists have cardiovascular and renal benefits for these patients and may also have anti-inflammatory properties. This meta-analysis of cardiovascular outcome trials suggests that GLP-1 receptor agonists do not increase the risk for respiratory tract infections or acute respiratory distress syndrome in patients with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular comorbidities.

Patients with autoimmune chronic inflammatory diseases present increased biomarkers of thromboinflammation and endothelial dysfunction in the absence of flares and cardiovascular comorbidities

Panagiota Anyfanti, Eleni Gavriilaki, Barbara Nikolaidou, Efthalia Yiannaki, Antonios Lazaridis, Nikolaos Papadopoulos, Stella Douma, Michael Doumas, Eugenia Gkaliagkousi

Summary: The study found that patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases have increased levels of endothelial and platelet microvesicles, even in the absence of disease flares and cardiovascular comorbidities. These microvesicles may indicate a potential risk for cardiovascular disease in these patients.

Assessment of skin microcirculation in primary aldosteronism: impaired microvascular responses compared to essential hypertensives and normotensives

Eugenia Gkaliagkousi, Antonios Lazaridis, Panagiota Anyfanti, Konstantinos Stavropoulos, Konstantinos Imprialos, Areti Triantafyllou, Konstantinos Mastrogiannis, Stella Douma, Michalis Doumas

Summary: This study used LSCI combined with PORH to evaluate skin microvascular function in PA patients, and found that SMF was significantly impaired in PAs compared to EHs and NTs, with a positive correlation between plasma aldosterone and occlusion flux in PAs. Further research is needed to explore the clinical implications of these findings in terms of pathophysiology and cardiovascular risk prediction.

The role of asymmetric dimethylarginine in endothelial dysfunction and abnormal nitric oxide metabolism in systemic sclerosis: results from a pilot study

Eleni Pagkopoulou, Stergios Soulaidopoulos, Niki Katsiki, Afroditi Malliari, Charalampos Loutradis, Asterios Karagiannis, Michael Doumas, Alexandros Garyfallos, George Kitas, Theodoros Dimitroulas

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and macrovascular endothelial function in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). The results suggest that ADMA may be associated with accelerated atherosclerosis in early stages of SSc, as evidenced by a significant positive correlation between ADMA levels and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) in individuals with early SSc.
