Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the agreement between 3D transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) for assessing mitral annular (MA) dimensions. The results showed good correlation between the two modalities, although MDCT provided systematically larger MA measurements compared to 3D TEE.

Summary: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a rare disease with a high mortality rate and rising incidence, and timely diagnosis is crucial for appropriate therapy. Imaging tests, such as echocardiography and cardiac computed tomography (CCT), play an important role in diagnosing IE. The joint application of these tests improves the overall sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing IE.

Summary: The study demonstrated that cardiac computed tomography (CT) throughout the full cardiac cycle has higher sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing patent foramen ovale (PFO) compared to single-phase CT, and can be used as an alternative method to transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) for detecting PFO in stroke patients.

Summary: Delayed enhancement cardiac CT scanning is reliable for the diagnosis of left atrial appendage thrombus but limited by scanning heterogeneity. In this study, we found that early contrast-enhanced CT scanning with 1 and 3-min delay phase significantly improved diagnostic efficiency and direct 3-min delayed scanning is suitable for high-risk patients.

Summary: In patients with PVE, cardiac CT was found to be more accurate in diagnosing valvular and perivalvular abscesses, vegetations, and inflammatory infiltration compared to echocardiography. However, echocardiography had a higher diagnostic value in evaluating paravalvular leakage. The combination of cardiac CT and echocardiography improves the diagnostic accuracy of PVE and both examinations should be performed in these patients.

Summary: The study found that the morphological characteristics of BAV did not determine aortic dilatation, but age, sex, and severity of aortic stenosis were predictors of bicuspid aortopathy. This suggests that treatment planning for BAV patients should focus on age, sex, and aortic stenosis severity rather than valve morphology.

Summary: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a diverse disease with high morbidity and mortality rates. It can affect native valves, prosthetic valves, and intra-cardiac devices, causing systemic complications. Early diagnosis and risk stratification of IE rely on a combination of clinical, laboratory, and cardiac imaging evaluation. Various imaging modalities, including transthoracic echocardiography and advanced techniques such as cardiac computed tomography and F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography, play important roles in providing essential diagnostic and prognostic information for IE.

Summary: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia worldwide and is often managed using multimodality imaging techniques, including transesophageal echocardiography and computed tomography. Imaging plays a crucial role in excluding left atrial thrombus before cardioversion and during left atrial appendage occlusion device implantation.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between the degree of aortic coarctation and surgical prognosis in infants with simple coarctation of the aorta. The degree of coarctation was found to be a significant risk factor for a prolonged postoperative ICU stay, and it was also correlated with the Z scores of the ascending aorta and postcoarctation aorta.

Summary: Although transcatheter valve therapy is rapidly evolving, surgical valve replacement is still required in many patients with severe left-side valve stenosis or regurgitation, and lifelong efficient anticoagulation of these patients remains problematic. The availability of multimodal imaging techniques enables accurate diagnosis of mechanical valve thrombosis and aids in establishing the treatment method and timing. This article provides an overview of the essential role of non-invasive exploration in the treatment of mechanical prosthetic valve thrombosis.

Summary: In diagnosing infective endocarditis, transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and cardiac computed tomography (CCT) both demonstrate good diagnostic accuracy, with TEE being more sensitive in detecting leaflet defects and CCT performing better in cases of prosthetic valve involvement. Additionally, CCT shows a trend towards improved detection of periannular complications. Both modalities have comparable performance in detecting other complications of infective endocarditis.

Summary: This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) for the primary prevention of cardiac arrhythmias. The results showed that ICD systems are cost-effective for patients with ischemic and nonischemic heart disease younger than 68 years old. However, for older nonischemic patients, the cost-effectiveness ratio is higher.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate predictors of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with ischaemic cardiomyopathy and develop a risk score. The study found that previous heart failure admission, worsening angina or dyspnea, estimated glomerular filtration rate <= 60 mL/min/1.73 m2, age > 73 years, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, end-diastolic volume index > 83 mL/m2, and scarred myocardium > 12% were independent predictors of MACE. Based on these factors, patients can be classified into intermediate, high, or very high risk. The importance of this study lies in providing a simple method to predict the risk of MACE in patients with ischaemic cardiomyopathy.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the acute cardiovascular adaptation of the fetus after connection to an artificial placenta (AP) using ultrasound and invasive and non-invasive hemodynamic assessment. The results showed that the connection to the AP system resulted in a reduction in the pulsatility index and increased umbilical venous peak velocity. While cardiac structure and function were preserved in the short term, the system led to non-physiologically elevated venous pressure and pulsatile flow.

Summary: X-ray phase contrast imaging (X-PCI) is a non-destructive technique for high-resolution, three-dimensional imaging of soft tissue samples. This study assessed the quality of standard histopathological techniques on human tissue samples that had been irradiated with different doses of X-rays in the context of an X-PCI experiment. The results showed that previous X-PCI did not affect the quality of routine histochemical and immunohistochemical staining, as well as DNA and RNA analyses on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) human samples. Based on these findings, performing X-PCI on FFPE human biopsies is feasible and acceptable.

Summary: Changes in cardiovascular anatomy and function induced by intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) have long-term impacts and may increase the predisposition to heart disease in adulthood. This study investigated the relationship between morphological remodeling and angular variation of QRS and T-wave dominant vectors in IUGR using computational models. The results suggest that IUGR-induced morphological remodeling could contribute to the observed angle changes in IUGR patients.
