Summary: This retrospective cohort study suggests that early ECMO treatment is associated with lower in-hospital mortality. Therefore, ECMO can be considered as an effective treatment option for high-risk PE patients in higher-volume hospitals.

Summary: This study investigated the fatalities and causes of death in harness racehorses in Norway and Sweden between 2014 and 2019. The results showed that sudden death accounted for 85.5% of the fatalities. An increase in the number of race starts within the last 30 days was associated with a higher risk of sudden death. Hemorrhage after vessel rupture was the primary cause of death in some cases.

Summary: This study reviewed the modifiable risk and protective factors of sudden cardiac death (SCD). Observational studies showed that diabetes mellitus, smoking, and early repolarization pattern are risk factors for SCD, while implanted cardiac defibrillator and physical activity are protective factors. Randomized controlled trials identified mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist, beta-blockers, sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors, and implanted cardiac defibrillator as credible protective factors in patients with heart failure.

Summary: This study aimed to identify factors, including primary care, that can predict length of hospital stay, mortality, and re-hospitalization within 6 months for patients with pulmonary embolism. The study found that besides the PESI score, elevated serum troponin and diabetes may be associated with longer hospital stays.

Summary: Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a serious complication of acute pulmonary embolism (PE) which is often not diagnosed. Splenectomy and non-O blood group may be associated with an increased risk of CTEPH.

Summary: This study investigated the association of 22 SNPs with PE, showing that PE is a complex disease with many contributing factors. However, the SNPs examined did not show significant differences between cases and controls, indicating that larger sample sizes are needed to reliably detect small effects.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether there are sex-specific differences in risk factors for noncancer-related DVT and PE in middle-aged and older individuals. The results showed that anthropometric obesity measures were more strongly associated with DVT and PE in women than in men.

Summary: This study aimed to identify risk factors associated with sleep-related deaths of infants in Manitoba, Canada. The results showed that unsafe sleep environments, particularly non-approved sleep surfaces and bedsharing, were major risk factors for sleep-related infant deaths. Families in low-income neighborhoods, Indigenous families, and families with young mothers were disproportionately affected.

Summary: This study focuses on the burden of and associations with lower extremity disease (LED) among individuals with known cardiovascular disease risk factors (CVDRFs) in Malawi, a low-income country. The results showed that a quarter of the participants had at least one symptom or sign of LED, highlighting the importance of further research to prevent LED and limb loss.

Summary: This study found that prolonged QRS duration and QTc interval are associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD). However, when the QTc interval is deconstructed into QRS and JTc intervals, the repolarization component (JTc) appears to have no independent prognostic value.

Summary: This study found a significant correlation between the presence of antiphospholipid antibody positivity and pulmonary embolism events in sarcoidosis patients. There was no significant difference in smoking habit, obesity, or hereditary thrombophilia frequency between the two groups with and without pulmonary embolism.

Summary: Based on the German nationwide inpatient sample data, the presence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and especially pulmonary embolism (PE) substantially increased in-hospital mortality of patients with paralysis. Cancer, heart failure, COPD, obesity, and acute paraplegia were identified as risk factors for PE.

Summary: This study analyzed the distribution and epidemiological characteristics of sudden deaths in Taiwan, as well as the associated meteorological factors. The findings showed a higher incidence of sudden death in winter and during the afternoon. Additionally, higher temperature was linked to a lower risk of sudden death, while higher humidity and discomfort index were associated with increased risks.

Summary: The study found that deleterious variants in genes related to cardiomyocyte integrity are more common in children with fatal acute myocarditis in New York City compared to controls matched by genetic ancestry. These variants may confer susceptibility to myocardial inflammation and result in more rapid and severe disease progression.
