Summary: Lethal models of Ebola virus disease have been developed using virus isolates from human cases in mice and guinea pigs. However, the use of non-adapted virus in mice has been limited due to the absence of overt clinical disease. Recently recognized sequelae in human cases emphasize the importance of investigating non-lethal infection in both humans and animal models.

Summary: Transmission trees can be established through detailed contact histories, statistical or phylogenetic inference, or a combination of methods. Each approach has its limitations, and the extent to which they succeed in revealing a 'true' transmission history remains unclear. In this study, we compared the transmission trees obtained through contact tracing investigations and various inference methods to identify the contribution and value of each approach.
