Age, maturation and population structure of the Humboldt squid Dosidicus gigas were studied based on random sampling of the Chinese jigging fishery off the Peruvian Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) during 2008-2010. Estimated ages ranged from 144 to 633 days, confirming that the squid is a short-lived species with longevity no longer than 2 years. Occurrence of mature females and hatching in each month indicated that Humboldt squid spawned year-round. Back-calculated hatching dates for the samples were from January 22(nd), 2008 to April 22(nd), 2010 with a peak between January and March. Two size-based and two hatching date-based populations could be defined from mantle length (ML) at maturity and back-calculated hatching dates, respectively. Females matured at a larger size than males, and there was a significant difference in ML at maturity between the two hatching groups (P < 0.05). The waters adjacent to 11A degrees S off the Peruvian EEZ may be a potential spawning ground. This study shows the complexity of the population structure and large variability in key life history parameters in the Humboldt squid off the Peruvian EEZ, which should be considered in the assessment and management of this important resource.

Interannual and ontogenetic stage differences on trophic ecology of neon flying squid Ommastrephes bartramii inferred from stable isotope analyses in beaks

Yan Wang, Peiwu Han, Xinjun Chen, Zhou Fang

Summary: This study used stable isotope analysis to investigate the interannual and ontogenetic stage variation in trophic ecology of Ommastrephes bartramii. The results showed significant differences in delta C-13 and delta N-15 values of beaks between different years and ontogenetic stages. The overlap rate between different years varied, with the highest rate observed between 2012 and 2016. The findings suggest that the marine environment during the El Nino event in 2015 negatively affected the growth of prey organisms and the feeding behavior of O. bartramii, resulting in a narrower isotope niche.

Diagnosis of the Senegalese Marine Fisheries Profile during the Last Two Decades: A Perspective toward Fisheries Management

Ousmane Sarr, Richard Kindong, Siquan Tian, Fambaye Ngom Sow, Momar Ka, Ousmane Niang Seye

Summary: The coasts of Senegal have abundant fishery resources due to the frequent occurrence of intense upwelling systems. Fishing is a vital activity for Senegal, playing an important role in the country's socioeconomic plans and food security. This review provides an update on the Senegalese marine fisheries from 1999 to 2018, discussing the political environment and management measures taken to protect exploited species. The study reveals the dynamic and significant contribution of the Senegalese fishing sectors to the country's economic growth. However, it also highlights increasing catches, economic value, and illegal fishing practices in the marine fisheries sector. The review identifies the main challenges faced by the fisheries sector and suggests recommendations to address them, including the application of new assessment methods suitable for data-poor fisheries.

Occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the seafood from an important fishing area in the East China Sea and a comparison between seafood from different origins

Wang Qian, Lu Dequan, Xiong Yiran, Peng Fei, Li Juan-ying, Wu Feng, Chu Yanping, Sun Ruihua, Tian Siquan

Summary: This study analyzed the levels of PAHs in various coastal marine seafood in the Wentai fishing area and identified the sources of these PAHs. The results showed that the PAHs in the seafood were mainly derived from fossil fuel sources. The study also assessed the behavior of PAHs in the food chain and their association with dietary risk. It was found that the area had a relatively short food chain and higher trophic magnification factors. The highest carcinogenic risk was associated with consuming yellow croaker. Therefore, it is necessary to control the unintentional use of fossil fuels and optimize the energy structure in the nearby terrestrial area to reduce dietary risk.
