Summary: Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is a non-atherosclerotic vascular disease that predominantly affects women. Its exact cause is still poorly understood, but it is likely to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors, leading to arterial fibrosis, cellular hyperplasia, and distortion of the arterial wall architecture. FMD can affect various arteries throughout the body, not just the renal and cerebrovascular arteries.

Summary: This study presents technical outlooks on computerized carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) measurements and provides considerations for the development and comparison of these methods. A multi-center database of 500 images was collected and three manual segmentations and seven computerized methods were employed to measure the CIMT. The computerized methods showed comparable results with previous studies and demonstrated promising segmentation outcomes. The entire database has been made publicly available for further research and comparison.

Summary: This study investigates the use of urinary proteomics in the diagnosis of FMD and develops a classifier to distinguish FMD patients from healthy controls and other diseases. Furthermore, the study finds a positive correlation between the proteomic score and the arterial geometry and mechanics in FMD patients.

Intima Media Thickness and Cognitive Function Among Adults: Meta-Analysis of Observational and Longitudinal Studies

Summary: This study utilized systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the relationship between carotid intima media thickness (IMT) and cognitive function. The results showed a negative association between IMT and cognitive function, particularly in cross-sectional studies. However, this association lost significance in longitudinal studies and when controlling for covariates in cross-sectional studies. Furthermore, the strength of these associations did not appear to be modified by age, sex, body mass index, and baseline IMT values.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that arterial stiffness, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure are associated with incident hypertension. These findings are clinically important for the prevention of arterial hypertension and reducing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

Summary: Sex chromosomes and sex hormones play differential roles in blood pressure regulation and cardiovascular risk factors between females and males with essential arterial hypertension. The risk for cardiovascular disease is higher in females at lower blood pressure levels, suggesting the need for sex-specific thresholds in hypertension diagnosis. It is currently unknown if hypertension should be managed differently in females and males, highlighting the need for focused research on sex-specific prevention and management.

Summary: Arterial pulse waves (PWs), such as blood pressure and photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals, are rich sources of information for assessing vascular age and identifying individuals at elevated cardiovascular risk. This review explores the possibilities and limitations of reduced-order biophysical models and theoretical and empirical methods for analyzing PW signals and extracting clinically relevant information. Detailed mathematical derivations are provided, demonstrating the relationships between these models and methods. Suggestions for future research are also outlined to fully utilize the potential of modeling and analyzing PW signals for accurate vascular age assessment.

Vascular function in hypertension: does gender dimension matter?

Summary: Blood pressure and vascular ageing trajectories differ between men and women due to sex-related and gender-related factors. Endogenous 17β-estradiol plays a protective role in women's vascular aging, but gender-related factors such as psychological stress and low socioeconomic status have a greater impact on vascular aging in women. On the other hand, men are more susceptible to the adverse effects of alcohol consumption and social deprivation. Unhealthy diet habits and smoking have a disproportional negative effect on women's vascular health. Therefore, future research and prevention strategies should take into account the complex role of gender-related factors.
