Summary: Childhood obstructive sleep apnea is a common chronic disorder that can lead to growth retardation, cognitive impairments, and complications. This study found altered spontaneous brain activity in OSA children, showing abnormalities in various brain regions like lingual gyrus and middle frontal gyrus, which may provide diagnostic biomarkers for early detection.

Summary: The aim of this study was to examine the association between adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MD) and sleep duration and sleep-related disorders in Spanish adolescents. The results showed that adolescents with high adherence to the MD were more likely to have optimal sleep duration and fewer sleep-related problems.

Summary: This study compared the behavioral and cognitive characteristics of poor and good sleepers with and without developmental disability in a community-based sample of preschool children. Results indicated that poor sleepers with developmental disability exhibited higher levels of attention problems and aggressive behaviors, as well as more depressive symptoms and stress reported by caregivers compared to good sleepers with developmental disability. Additionally, poor sleepers without developmental disability only scored significantly higher on the Anxious/Depressed subscale of the Child Behavior Checklist when compared to good sleepers without developmental disability. Cognitive development and adaptive functioning were not significantly different between poor and good sleepers with and without developmental disability. The study concluded that externalizing problems such as aggressive behaviors, rather than cognitive development, are associated with sleep difficulties in preschool children with developmental disability.

Summary: This study examines the prevalence of blood transfusion protocols for neurologically vs. non-neurologically injured patients in US ICUs. The use of restrictive transfusion protocols differs between patients with CNS and non-CNS diagnoses, but there is no difference in the use of massive transfusion protocols.

Summary: This study found that serum PLP concentrations were negatively associated with daytime sleepiness, and this association may only exist in males. Moreover, it was also inversely related to abnormal sleep duration (very short, short, long) compared to normal sleep duration.

Summary: Autoimmune neurologic diseases are a new type of immune-mediated diseases with diverse clinical manifestations. Sleep disturbances, including excessive daytime sleep, RBD, and narcolepsy, have been reported to have a significant negative impact on the quality of life in patients with autoimmune neurologic diseases. These sleep disturbances can be either initial symptoms or persistent throughout the disease course, and they are believed to be associated with underlying pathophysiological mechanisms.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between sleep problems and asthma and allergic rhinitis among Chinese preschoolers. The results showed that frequent nocturnal awakening was associated with asthma and allergic rhinitis, while short sleep duration and late bedtime were not significantly associated with these diseases. Additionally, the association of frequent nocturnal awakening with asthma differed by gender.

Summary: Neurologic music therapy (NMT) is a non-pharmacological approach that uses music to interact with motor, sensory, and cognitive dysfunctions caused by damage or diseases of the nervous system. This study critically evaluated the literature on the application of specific NMT techniques in rehabilitating geriatric disorders, with a focus on the RAS technique for PD and SP patients, showing significant improvements in gait parameters and balance.

Summary: The study found that young people exhibit more dysfunctional sleep-related thoughts and emotions, as well as maladaptive emotion regulation strategies. Surprisingly, only coping strategies after a stressful event and dysfunctional beliefs about sleep, rather than other arousal or sleep reactivity factors, were associated with overall worse sleep, especially sleep onset latency and sleep efficiency.

Summary: This study provides an extensive overview on the major neurological complications in a large cohort of COVID-19 patients. The results show that neurological manifestations of COVID-19 include cerebrovascular disease, peripheral nervous system diseases, altered mental status, and other disorders. The study confirms that involvement of the nervous system is common in SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Summary: The study found that Chilean workers sleep less than the general population in the country (7.14 hours vs. 7.33 hours) and Chileans overall sleep less compared to other countries (7.24 hours per day). Sleep problems are more strongly related to commuting accidents than to workplace accidents. Sleep quantity can explain 24% of the variance in commuting accidents' rates, indicating a neglected issue that should be addressed in future prevention programs.
