Background: COPD is a major contributor to the global burden of disease. Our objective was to examine changes in the mortality rate among persons with COPD in the United States. Methods: We conducted prospective studies using data from 5,185 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) I Epidemiologic Follow-up Study (baseline examination from 1971-1975; follow-up from 1992-1993) and 10,954 participants of the NHANES III Linked Mortality Study (baseline examination from 1988-1994; follow-up through 2006). Results: The age-adjusted rate (per 1,000 person-years) among participants with moderate or severe COPD (23.9 and 20.2) was about 2.5 to 3 times higher than the rate among participants with normal lung function (10.4 and 6.2) in NHANES I and NHANES III, respectively. Compared with NHANES I, the mortality rate among participants in NHANES III decreased by 15.8% for those with moderate or severe COPD, 25.2% for those with mild COPD, 35.9% for those with respiratory symptoms with normal lung function, 16.6% for those with restrictive impairment, and 40.1% for those with normal lung function. However, the decrease did not reach statistical significance among participants with moderate or severe COPD. The decreases in the mortality rate among men with moderate or severe COPD (-17.8%) or with restrictive impairment (-35.1%) exceeded the changes among women (+3% and -6.1%, respectively). Conclusions: The secular decline in the mortality rate in the United States benefited people with COPD less than those with normal lung function. CHEST 2012; 141(1):101-110

Expression profile of long non-coding RNAs in the intestine of black rockfish Sebastes schlegelii in response to Edwardsiella tarda infection

Xu Yan, Min Cao, Qiang Fu, Ning Yang, Ningning Wang, Lin Song, Chao Li

Summary: In this study, lncRNAs in the intestine of black rockfish after Edwardsiella tarda infection were identified and analyzed. Results showed that these lncRNAs were significantly regulated and involved in metabolic and immune-related pathways. Co-expression of lncRNAs and mRNAs with metabolic and immunity functions were also found. This research provides a foundation for further investigation of the regulatory roles of lncRNAs in the intestinal immune response of black rockfish.

Bacterial induced miR-144-5p modulates intestinal inflammatory response of Japanese flounder by targeting Hsp90α-dependent NLR signaling pathway

Yingrui Li, Lin Su, Baoshan Guo, Shun Zhou, Chao Li, Yunji Xiu

Summary: Pathogens infection induces intestinal inflammatory processes. MicroRNAs in teleost serve as vital regulators in innate immunity responses against pathogen infection. MiR-144-5p is identified as negative regulator in teleost against bacterial infection. It down-regulates inflammation-related cytokines by targeting Hsp90 alpha, ultimately promoting bacterial infection.

Molecular characterization and expression analysis of immunoglobulins (IgM and IgT) heavy chains in black rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii) that response to bacterial challenge

Min Cao, Qi Li, Xiantong Liu, Qiang Fu, Chao Li

Summary: Sebastes schlegelii is a fish species with high economic value, but the outbreak of diseases in its aquaculture industry has caused significant economic losses. Study of the fish immune system, particularly the immunoglobulin genes, can provide insights into the immune response to pathogens and contribute to the development of prevention and control methods. This study successfully identified and cloned the immunoglobulin heavy chain genes (sIgM, mIgM, sIgT, and mIgT) of S. schlegelii, revealing their high conservation during evolution.

Genome-wide identification and functional characterization of inhibitor of nuclear factor-ΚB (IΚB) kinase (IKK) in turbot (Scophthalmus maximus)

Zhe Liu, Peng Liu, Tong Cui, Xuan Chen, Beibei Wang, Chengbin Gao, Zhongyi Wang, Chao Li, Ning Yang

Summary: Six IKK genes were identified in turbot, and they were widely expressed in various tissues. After bacterial infection, these genes showed different expression patterns in mucosal tissues, indicating their potential roles in maintaining mucosal barrier integrity. Protein-protein interaction network analysis revealed that most interacting proteins of IKK genes were related to the NF-kappa B signaling pathway. Functional experiments confirmed the involvement of SmIKK alpha/SmIKK alpha 2/SmIKK beta in the activation of NF-kappa B in turbot.

An Enhancement Strategy for Macau's Largos from a Syntactic Perspective

Senyu Lou, Yaou Zhang, Chao Li, Jingjing Chen

Summary: This paper focuses on the Largos of the Macau Peninsula and categorizes their main functions as serving the community, facilitating traffic, and promoting religious culture through historical combing and field research. A spatial syntactic theory is applied to establish a model, using three syntactic parameters - synergy, integration, and choice - to interpret the analysis results. Based on the syntactic parameters, the results are divided into four categories, and improvement strategies are proposed for the selected spaces that require enhancements. Taking Macau's Largos as an example, this paper aims to provide a reference for the effective renewal of urban micro-spaces and small public spaces by applying space syntax analysis.
