Broadband Forward Light Scattering by Architectural Design of Core-Shell Silicon Particles

Maria Letizia De Marco, Taizhi Jiang, Jie Fang, Sabrina Lacomme, Yuebing Zheng, Alexandre Baron, Brian A. Korgel, Philippe Barois, Glenna L. Drisko, Cyril Aymonier

Summary: This study demonstrates the synthesis of Mie-resonant core-shell particles with overlapping electric and magnetic dipole resonances in the visible spectrum, allowing for tuning of the relative position and intensity of these resonances. Coating high-index particles with low-index shells coalesces the dipoles while maintaining high scattering efficiency, leading to broadband forward scattering. This synthetic strategy opens up new possibilities for metamaterial fabrication with unprecedented control over visible light manipulation.

Hydrolysis-dehydration of cellulose to glucose and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural over Sibunit solid acid carbon catalysts under semi-flow conditions

Cyril Aymonier, Nikolay V. Gromov, Oxana P. Taran, Valentin N. Parmon

Summary: This study demonstrates the possibility of producing glucose and 5-HMF from inedible cellulose using solid acid catalysts based on Sibunit carbon material; the acidity of the catalyst and the nature and amount of surface acid groups affect the formation of glucose and 5-HMF; through proper processing, yields of up to 75% and 10% for glucose and 5-HMF, respectively, can be obtained from polysaccharides.

Correlation between the Dynamics of Nanoconfined Water and the Local Chemical Environment in Calcium Silicate Hydrate Nanominerals

Valentina Musumeci, Guido Goracci, Paula Sanz Camacho, Jorge S. Dolado, Cyril Aymonier

Summary: The dynamics of water molecules in calcium silicate hydrates are significantly influenced by the local chemical environment, affecting the distribution of hydrogen bond network. In SiOH-rich environments, the ordered ice-like solvation water transforms into a disordered liquid-like distribution in CaOH-rich environments.

Correlation between the Dynamics of Nanoconfined Water and the Local Chemical Environment in Calcium Silicate Hydrate Nanominerals

Valentina Musumeci, Guido Goracci, Paula Sanz Camacho, Jorge S. Dolado, Cyril Aymonier

Summary: By synthesizing model nanocrystals and studying them with spectroscopic techniques, this research reveals that the local chemical environment has a significant impact on the hydrogen bond network and dynamics of solvent water. Solvation water in SiOH-rich environments shows an ordered ice-like state, while in CaOH-rich environments, it exhibits a disordered liquid-like distribution.

Chemistry Platform for the Ultrafast Continuous Synthesis of High-Quality III-V Quantum Dots

B. Giroire, A. Garcia, S. Marre, T. Cardinal, C. Aymonier

Summary: A chemistry platform for the continuous synthesis of high-quality III-nitride quantum dots using supercritical solvents and short residence times was demonstrated. The GaN quantum dots produced exhibited strong UV photoluminescence and showed a continuous bandgap shift towards lower energies with increasing indium content. Additionally, an example of metal site substitution in the synthesis of InxGa1-xN solid solution was provided.

Behavior of Silicon Carbide Materials under Dry to Hydrothermal Conditions

Nicolas Biscay, Lucile Henry, Tadafumi Adschiri, Masahiro Yoshimura, Cyril Aymonier

Summary: Silicon carbide materials are excellent candidates for high-performance applications due to their outstanding thermomechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The oxidation behavior of SiC depends on temperature and time, and wet oxidation can accelerate the process. Hydrothermal media have an impact on SiC materials, which has been explained by different models.

Summary: A simple and low-cost continuous segmented-flow process for the synthesis of Ag and Au spherical-shaped nanoparticles is presented. The flow conditions have opposite effects on the synthesis of Ag and Au nanoparticles, with low residence times improving Ag nanoparticle production and high residence times improving Au nanoparticle synthesis yield and quality.

Investigating (Pseudo)-Heterogeneous Pd-Catalysts for Kraft Lignin Depolymerization under Mild Aqueous Basic Conditions

Dolores Bourbiaux, Yu Xu, Laurence Burel, Firat Goc, Pascal Fongarland, Regis Philippe, Guillaume Aubert, Cyril Aymonier, Franck Rataboul, Laurent Djakovitch

Summary: Lignin is a major component of lignocellulosic biomass and can be depolymerized under mild oxidizing conditions with the Pd catalyst to produce oxygenated aromatic compounds. The richness of functional groups in lignin makes it an attractive precursor for a wide variety of aromatic compounds. Differences in selectivity in aromatic monomers may arise depending on the catalyst nature and synthetic methods used.
