Summary: This study uncovers the interaction between auxin and cytokinin in shaping root architecture in rice, highlighting the crucial roles of both hormones in root development. The antagonistic activities of auxin and cytokinin mutually balance each other to ensure proper root formation. The research demonstrates the tissue-specific cytokinin response domains and the functional significance of auxin-cytokinin interaction during root development in rice, a model grass species.

Summary: The root system of rice, mainly composed of shoot-borne adventitious/crown roots, serves as an excellent model system to study the shoot-to-root trans-differentiation process. This study uncovers global changes in protein and metabolite abundance and protein phosphorylation during crown root development in response to auxin stimulus. It identifies differentially regulated proteins, amino acids, and phosphoproteins, and reveals the involvement of auxin signaling in chromatin conformational change, gene expression, cell cycle regulation, and ethylene biosynthesis. The study also highlights the importance of translational and post-translational regulation in root organogenesis.

Summary: This study reveals that the process of crown root development and auxin-induced de novo root organogenesis during in vitro plantlet regeneration share a common auxin-OsWOX10 regulatory module in rice. The activation of genes involved in auxin homeostasis and signaling plays a crucial role in the initiation and outgrowth of rice crown root primordia. The transcription factor OsWOX10 promotes de novo root organogenesis in regenerated shoots and induces adventitious roots in Arabidopsis.

Summary: This study reveals that OsSAUR10 plays a role in cell elongation and contributes to plant growth in rice. The expression of OsSAUR10 is regulated in a tissue-specific, developmental, and hormone-dependent manner. Mutants of OsSAUR10 exhibit various developmental defects. Furthermore, OsSAUR10 is involved in regulating the expression of genes related to auxin biosynthesis and polar transport.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of lateral root formation in plants and identifies prohibitin 3 as a regulator of lateral root initiation. Prohibitin 3 affects the accumulation of endogenous nitric oxide and degradation of IAA proteins, leading to the activation of lateral root initiation.

Summary: Brassinosteroids (BRs) induce nitric oxide (NO) synthesis, improving plant defense systems against metalloid phytotoxicity. Rice, susceptible to arsenic (As) toxicity, benefits from exogenously applied BRs, which increase lateral root formation and decrease As-induced lignin deposition, while restoring altered NO levels.

Summary: CRL1 is a key regulator in rice crown root initiation, and it can bind multiple DNA sequences to activate target genes. Targeted mutation of CRL1-regulated genes using CRISPR/Cas9 reveals their role in promoting crown root development. Additionally, OsbHLH044 represses a regulatory module to modulate specific processes during crown root formation regulated by CRL1.

Summary: In this study, the roles of PIN genes in rice were investigated. It was found that PIN5C and PIN9 were upregulated during salt and drought stress, while prolonged auxin treatment led to downregulation of PIN expression and altered root formation. This research provides insights for developing stress-tolerant rice and plants with desirable root architecture through genetic engineering.

Summary: This paper investigates the correlation between cold storage time, quality indexes, volatile flavor compounds, and RGB value readouts from photos taken by a mobile phone. The results show that the RGB values of the central site of kiwifruit are strongly associated with storage time and all quality indicators. A novel and smart strategy to predict the shelf life and quality parameters of kiwifruit by capturing and calculating RGB values using a smartphone is proposed.
