A highly efficient one-pot procedure for the preparation of 1-chloroalkynes and 1-chlorobutadiynes from terminal and trialkylsilyl-protected precursors is reported. This convenient reaction, proceeding under mild conditions, utilizes N-chlorosuccinimide as the chlorinating agent and tolerates a range of functional groups.

Direct Preparation of N-Substituted Pyrazoles from Primary Aliphatic or Aromatic Amines

Nurbey Gulia, Marcin Malecki, Slawomir Szafert

Summary: This study presents an original method for the preparation of N-alkyl and N-aryl pyrazoles using primary aliphatic or aromatic amines as a limiting reagent. The protocol avoids the use of inorganic reagents, requires short reaction time, mild conditions, and utilizes commercially available starting reagents. Pyrazoles with a variety of N-substituents were successfully obtained using this method for both aliphatic and aromatic amines.

Novel hybrid-glass-based material for infiltration of early caries lesions

Ivana Nedeljkovic, Marwa Abdelaziz, Albert J. Feilzer, Slawomir Szafert, Nurbey Gulia, Monostoi Dawaa, Ivo Krejci, Cornelis J. Kleverlaan

Summary: This study assessed the effectiveness of two experimental hybrid-glass-based infiltrants in arresting artificial white spot lesions (WSLs) in vitro and compared them with a resin-based infiltrant Icon. The results showed that the experimental hybrid-glass-based material without HAp-nanoparticles could completely arrest the progression of WSLs, while its version with HAp-nanoparticles and the resin-based infiltrant Icon could not.

Fluorescence Enhancement by Supramolecular Sequestration of aC54-Nanographene Trisimide by Hexabenzocoronene

Bartlomiej Pigulski, Kazutaka Shoyama, Meng-Jia Sun, Frank Wuerthner

Summary: The supramolecular trilayer nanographene complex formed by self-assembly exhibits structural stability and high thermodynamic stability in polar solvents. The complexation of NTI1 by two HBC molecules efficiently protects the NTI1 surface, resulting in fluorescence enhancement under ambient conditions.

Synthesis of Shape-Persistent meta-Arylene-Butadiynylene Macrocycles with a Different Ring Size

Marcin Malecki, Dorota Pawelczyk, Batlomiej Pigulski, Slawomir Szafert, Nurbey Gulia

Summary: A series of meta-phenylene-butadiynylene macrocycles were synthesized by homocoupling reaction, and a hexameric analogue was obtained using a step-by-step method. X-ray single-crystal analysis revealed the conformational diversity of the resulting macrocycles.

Temperature-Controlled Selective Mono- vs. Di-ortho-Arylation for the Synthesis of Arylhydrazine Derivatives

Nurbey Gulia, Jaroslaw Fornalski, Adrianna Gumienna, Malgorzata Ambroziak, Slawomir Szafert

Summary: This study reports a method of palladium-catalyzed C-H arylation assisted with a 3,4,4-trimethylpyrazol-5-on directing group, which selectively provides mono- and di-ortho-arylated products. The steric hindrance between the directing group and the already introduced aryl substituent enables control of mono- vs. diarylation selectivity by the reaction temperature. A series of monosubstituted and disubstituted derivatives were obtained in good yields. In addition, a one-pot procedure for unsymmetrical double-arylation to give corresponding products was developed, and the synthesis and X-ray study of intermediate palladium metallacycles were conducted. The decarboxylative cleavage of the pyrazolone directing group under mild conditions gave synthetically useful hydrazones. Overall, this solution provides an alternative synthetic pathway for ortho arylated derivatives of arylhydrazines.

Cytotoxicity and anti-biofilm properties of novel hybrid-glass-based caries infiltrant

Ivana Nedeljkovic, Behrouz Zandieh Doulabi, Marwa Abdelaziz, Albert J. Feilzer, Rob A. M. Exterkate, Slawomir Szafert, Nurbey Gulia, Ivo Krejci, Cornelis J. Kleverlaan

Summary: The cytotoxicity of a hybrid-glass-based infiltrant and its effect on biofilm attachment, growth, and metabolic activity were assessed and compared to a resin-based infiltrant. The results showed that the hybrid-glass-based infiltrant had minimal impact on cell viability and reduced bacterial attachment compared to the resin-based infiltrant.

Hybrids of Polyynes and Azo Dyes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Two-Photon Absorption

Dominika Kruszewska-Bak, Radoslaw Deska, Katarzyna Matczyszyn, Slawomir Szafert, Bartlomiej Pigulski

Summary: In this study, the synthesis and characterization of blends of polyynes and azo dyes were reported. The dominant contribution of the azo tautomer in the resulting dye end-capped linear carbon rods was confirmed using X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The linear and nonlinear optical properties of the hybrids were investigated and the influence of the length of the sp-hybridized carbon chain on two-photon absorption was analyzed.

Cycloaddition-Retro-Electrocyclization Click Reaction of Amine End-Capped Oligoynes with Tetracyanoethylene

Bartlomiej Pigulski, Klaudia Misiak, Patrycja Mecik, Slawomir Szafert

Summary: This study presents the first example of cycloaddition-retro-electrocyclization (CA-RE) click reaction with nitrogen end-capped push-pull oligoynes, which demonstrates fully regioselectivity and leads to the formation of unprecedented carbon rods with TCBD end-caps. The molecular structure of the products was confirmed using X-ray single crystal diffraction, and their optical and electronic properties were experimentally investigated and rationalized using DFT calculations.

Better big or strained? Deformations of shape persistent arylene butadiynylene macrocycles

Marcin S. S. Malecki, Przemyslaw Dopieralski, Nurbey Gulia, Bartlomiej Pigulski, Tadeusz Lis, Slawomir Szafert

Summary: Shape-persistent macrocycles have attracted researchers for their potential in synthesis and materials chemistry. They are relatively rigid and can spontaneously aggregate into supramolecular assemblies. The dependence of steric hindrance on oxygen atoms in 2,6-bis-acetylenephenolates on the structure of macrocycles obtained from these precursors has been studied. Crystal structures of arylene butadiynylene species have been analyzed, showing that various macrocycles can form regardless of steric hindrance.

Summary: The vibrational properties of push-pull polyynes were studied, indicating that functionalized polyynes may be important building blocks of organic materials with first-order optical nonlinearity. The comprehensive characterization of the vibrational properties of these molecules was achieved through density functional theory calculations and infrared spectroscopy analysis.

Solvent-free C-H alkynylation of azulenes

Agata Jarszak-Tyl, Bartlomiej Pigulski, Slawomir Szafert

Summary: A solvent-free coupling reaction of azulenes with 1-haloalkynes and 1-halopolyynes has been developed, which only requires simple grinding of substrates with basic Al2O3 without solvents or precious metal catalysts. The reaction allows for the direct introduction of a linear carbon chain up to (C C)(4), providing easy access to azulene end-capped sp-hybridised carbon molecular wires. Further reactivity testing shows that the resulting azulenes can be transformed into thiophenes through certain derivatives.
