Ambra ist ein seit Jahrtausenden hoch geschatzter Duftstoff aus dem Verdauungstrakt des Pottwals. Der olfaktorisch bedeutendste Inhaltsstoff ist -Ambrox (R), das durch Partialsynthese im groberen Mabstab aus dem Sclareol des Muskatellersalbeis gewonnen wird. Die Polyencyclisierungen von Homofarnesol und Homofarnsylsaure sind besonders elegante Totalsynthesen. 5,5a-Dehydroambrox zeichnet sich nicht nur durch exzellente Duftqualitaten aus, sondern auch durch die eleganten Totalsynthesen.
