Summary: 1,3-Butadiene (BD) is a common chemical used in plastic and rubber manufacturing, and exposure to BD has been linked to an increased risk of cancer. BD is metabolized into toxic epoxides that can cause DNA damage. A novel method for quantifying specific BD metabolites in urine has been developed, which can be used as a non-invasive biomarker for BD exposure and metabolism.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between the chemical compound 1,3-butadiene (BD) exposure and glucose dyshomeostasis and diabetes in the general population. The results showed that BD exposure was positively associated with an increased risk of glucose dyshomeostasis, prediabetes, and diabetes, and serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) mediated these associations.

Summary: The study investigated catalyst deactivation and mechanism of coke formation during gas phase dehydration of 1,3-butanediol on various solid acids. Different nature of cokes formed on different catalysts were characterized, with higher molecular weight carbonaceous products observed on HZSM5 and TPA/SiO2 compared to Al2O3 and SiO2/Al2O3. Insoluble coke was only detected on TPA/SiO2, attributed to the strength of its Bronsted acid sites. Additionally, GCMS chromatograms of total soluble coke revealed the presence of aromatic and polyaromatic species, particularly well differentiated on HZSM5.

Summary: In this study, several silica-supported metal oxides catalysts were used for the production of 1,3-butadiene via the dehydration of 1,3-butanediol. The WO3/SiO2 catalyst showed the most promising activity, and various parameters such as reaction temperature, contact time, calcination temperature, and W content influenced the reaction rate and product yield.

Summary: This study successfully synthesized 1,3-butadiene from glucose through an artificial metabolic pathway. Improving enzyme efficiency through computational simulations and controlling dissolved oxygen levels and pH are crucial for high production yields. The findings suggest the potential of producing nonbiological compounds from renewable carbon sources using rational enzyme design strategies.

Summary: This study assessed the potential biomarkers of acrylonitrile (AN) exposure by analyzing urinary mercapturic acids (CEMA, CHEMA, HEMA) and cotinine in AN-exposed and non-exposed factory workers. The results showed that urinary CEMA and CHEMA levels were linearly correlated with AN exposure, suggesting their potential as chemically-specific biomarkers for AN exposure. Additionally, cotinine was found to be a biomarker of cigarette smoke exposure for non-exposed workers.

Summary: Methylcarbamoyl mercapturic acid (MCAMA) is a urinary biomarker that can indicate human exposure to harmful compounds such as N,N-dimethylformamide and methyl isocyanate. This study found a strong association between smoking and higher levels of urinary MCAMA, highlighting the importance of tobacco smoke exposure assessment.

Summary: 1,3-Butadiene is a known human carcinogen, and exposure to it occurs through occupational exposure and environmental pollution. To improve risk assessment of 1,3-butadiene, it is necessary to quantitatively characterize the uncertainty in estimations of inter-individual variability in cancer-related effects. The study found that using hemoglobin adduct data can reduce uncertainty in parameter estimates and address dose-related differences in 1,3-butadiene metabolism.

Summary: A light-assisted semi-hydrogenation process using water as the hydrogen atom source and in situ photocatalysis was developed, showing excellent catalytic performance and selectivity for 1,3-butadiene semi-hydrogenation at ambient temperature. This H-2-free process has the potential to bring advancements in industrial hydrogenation technology in terms of economic and safe operations.

Summary: The study found that OTA-derived glucuronides in urine are suitable biomarkers for monitoring, but there is insufficient evidence to support the use of OTA-derived mercapturic acids as biomarkers. There is a linear relationship between urinary glucuronide excretion and OTA exposure, but more data is needed to establish this relationship between metabolites in urine and external dose.

Summary: The Ag-O-Si interfaces significantly enhanced the dehydrogenation of ethanol, while the Zr-O-Si interfaces promoted the condensation of acetaldehyde, leading to a high yield of 1,3-butadiene through the synergistic effects of these interfaces.

Summary: In this study, a series of bifunctional catalysts with different Zn/Ce ratios were synthesized using a solid-state grinding strategy and applied in the conversion of ethanol to 1,3-butadiene. The number of weak acid sites on the catalyst surface was found to be positively correlated with the yield of 1,3-butadiene. The catalyst with the optimal Zn/Ce ratio exhibited high ethanol conversion and selective production of 1,3-butadiene under relatively mild reaction conditions.
