Hypericum caprifoliatum is a natural source of phloroglucinol derivatives such as hyperbrasilol B, uliginosin B and japonicin A, compounds with pharmaceutical interest due to principally their antidepressant properties. This work studies supercritical fluid extraction to obtain non-volatile compounds from the aerial parts of H. caprifoliatum as well as the influence of the co-solvent as agent of process intensification. The experimental procedures were carried out in a pilot unity. The mathematical simulation of the experimental data was performed by mean of three mathematical models aiming to promote the improvement of the knowledge about this technology. The feasibility of the mathematical model was investigated by mean of fitting of the experimental data obtained. The co-solvents tested were ethanol, water, and water-ethanol mixtures. Vapor pressure and vapor-liquid equilibrium data for eugenol/caryophyllene binary system at low pressures by experimental and predictive methods

Victor Hugo S. Rodrigues, Rafael N. Almeida, Rubem M. F. Vargas, Eduardo Cassel

Summary: The main objective of this study was to determine the vapor-liquid equilibrium of the binary mixture eugenol/caryophyllene at reduced pressures and to obtain pure compounds vapor pressure data in the same low-pressure condition. Experimental data showed that the models used in this study were able to accurately calculate the temperature and vapor-phase molar fraction of the VLE system.

Summary: This study investigated the distillation products of Pterocaulon polystachyum and found that the essential oil exhibited antifungal activity against Microsporum gypseum, while the residual distillation water contained phenolic acids and coumarins of interest to the pharmaceutical and food industries. Additionally, a mathematical model was developed for the extraction curve.

Halotolerant Streptomyces spp. induce salt tolerance in maize through systemic induction of the antioxidant system and accumulation of proline

Rafaela Mendonca Nozari, Luisa Machado Ramos, Laura Alcantara da Luz, Rafael Nolibos Almeida, Aline Machado Lucas, Eduardo Cassel, Silvia Dias de Oliveira, Leandro Vieira Astarita, Eliane Romanato Santar

Summary: Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) can alleviate the detrimental effects of salinity in plants. In this study, we characterized Streptomyces spp. as halotolerant PGPR and evaluated their influence on salt stress-tolerance mechanisms in maize plants. The results showed that Streptomyces isolates had good tolerance to salt and could enhance the antioxidant system activity and osmolyte synthesis in plants. The response to salinity was observed in both roots and leaves, indicating a mechanism of systemic tolerance.

Extraction and fractionation of long pepper essential oil: process modeling and simulation

Rafael Nolibos Almeida, Guilherme Evaldt Rossa, Jessica Haupt de Castro, Arthur Fagundes Cavassa, Rubem Mario Figueiro Vargas, Eduardo Cassel

Summary: Steam distillation is a traditional method for obtaining essential oils, but its parameters have been determined empirically. In this study, the effects of pressure, temperature, time, and bed porosity on essential oil extraction were evaluated. Piper hispidinervum C. DC essential oil showed similar yields under different pressure conditions, but the bed porosity varied. The experimental data fitted well with the model proposed by Reverchon. Fractionation of long pepper oil in a batch distillation column resulted in fractions with high purity of safrole and terpinolene. Adjusting the process variables reduced extraction time and improved cost-effectiveness and product value.

Fractionated extraction of polyphenols from mate tea leaves using a combination of hydrophobic/hydrophilic NADES

Silvia Rebocho, Francisca Mano, Eduardo Cassel, Beatriz Anacleto, Maria do Rosario Bronze, Alexandre Paiva, Ana Rita C. Duarte

Summary: This study introduces a new methodology for the selective extraction of antioxidants from mate tea leaves using NADES, leading to two distinct extracts rich in pigments and polyphenols. The use of NADES systems increased the extraction of polyphenolic components by 30% compared to traditional solvents/techniques, and the stability of antioxidants in NADES was shown to be beneficial for at least three months.

Supercritical deposition of mono- and bimetallic Pd and Pt on TiO2 coated additively manufactured substrates for the application in the direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide

Laura L. Trinkies, Marlene Crone, Michael Tuerk, Manfred Kraut, Roland Dittmeyer

Summary: In this study, mono- and bimetallic Pd and Pt catalysts were deposited via supercritical fluid reactive deposition (SFRD) on TiO2 coated additively manufactured substrates. The focus of this work was to evaluate the suitability of these catalysts for the direct synthesis of H2O2 in the liquid phase. The results showed that all catalysts exhibited high activity and productivity, with PdPt bimetallic catalysts showing the highest productivity and an increase in Pd loading leading to a decrease in productivity. Comparison with literature data demonstrated the high suitability of the SFRD method for the proposed application, with the added benefits of simplicity and environmental friendliness in catalyst production.

On the design of a hydrogen micro-rectangular combustor for portable thermoelectric generators

Xiongbao Hu, Zuguo Shen, Yu Wang

Summary: It is impossible to control the outer wall temperature of the micro-combustor below the maximum allowable temperature of commercial thermoelectric generators simply through increasing the equivalent heat transfer coefficient. Three simple strategies were developed to improve temperature uniformity, yet none of them could ensure full temperature control.
