A convenient method for the synthesis of fluoromethylated carnitine biosynthesis intermediates, i.e. fluorinated derivatives of gamma-butyrobetaine and trimethyllysine, is described. The fluoromethylated probes were useful in both in vitro and cell based assays employing F-19 NMR and LC-MS analyses.
